New German WWII Mini Series Unsere Mütter

Watched part 1 last night on the iPlayer, really enjoyed it. Have set a series link and looking forward to the others.
 
Very Very good series. Its not band of brothers but I say that as a compliment. they went with something much more engaging, personal and untold.

As the yoof say, its totes emosh.
 
I have watched 2 episodes. It's enjoyable but certain things are not really believeable. I'd doubt that the 4 would be so openly close to their Jewish friend in Berlin in 1941. The battle scenes are good though.
 
It was last night. But now episode 2 is out.

Seems to be a moral reflexive exercise to me - basically regurgitating the stereo types. Not all Germans were nazis, some tried to help. Some turned to the dark side, some are just following orders.

It's like a self moralising BoB but without Hollywood budget and a seeming need to convince that some were different.
 
Its well made without being overblown I think. I'm not sure how "not a hollywood budget" is a bad thing when it still looks as good as it does.

As opposed to what narrative? Are you saying you would prefer a monochromatic narrative just because its the axis? Its just showing a range of characters just like BoB did :/ but taking the decision to focus on fewer characters to tell the story and including "behind the lines" positions. BoB was pretty stereotypical as well with most of the character depth came from the interviews before and after the episode with everyone in the episode being essentially good but having one choice critical flaw apart from winters who was basically just a good guy under pressure.

I enjoyed the inclusion of nationalistic partisans, the contrasting paths of the two brothers and the women and how they were woven personally. I enjoyed the focus on the eastern front as well and the contrasting parts of the German army. All of which you rarely get on western screens with good acting.
 
Difference being that unsere is designed to show the german psyche, and labour the feelings for all these events with a tiny spattering 9f action. I mean they replayed the brother running with food scene 3 times in two episodes. Bob was more like how the us troops felt in battle and the effect of that with a lot more action.
 
I know what they both were going for although I dont feel its laboured, just the main point of the series. It doesn't require a huge budget as the fighting isnt the focus and of course it will be an emotional and moral view of the circumstances as that's the point of the series. That's why I thought your previous observations odd as thats exactly what they are aiming for, so to mark it down due to that seems odd.

unless you were simply warning people its not a BoB copy.
 
I don't know I guess it's just because all the main friends seem to be good Germans but not nazis. And any bad acts they have to do are of direct order from a hard line ss and the character only reluctantly goes through with it. Or turns bad for half a second and then regrets it making it seem that it was all forced top down. Bleh anyway.
 
Just discovered this. Seems that part 1 is no longer available on iPlayer, anybody know anywhere else I could watch it? :)
 
its up on all good illegal sites under its original title. if the torrent doesnt come with subtitles you can get them from opensubtitles.org.

Fair enough, I'd point out theres at least two scenes where the initially "soft" brother is brutal with little or no provocation but if thats what you got from the series.. bleh as you say.

Having now watched the first episode, I have to say I think this is truly excellent. The attention to detail and way in which it deals with such sensitive issues make it a very good watch indeed. Anybody know of anything similar in terms of films/tv series? Have seen the film Downfall already which was excellent.
 
Am I correct that the SS insignia lapels have been blacked out on purpose due to German sensitivities/laws eg take a look at the lapels on the SS guy who is sleeping with the singer. I am assuming he is SS as he wears a hat with the Death's Head badge.

I think some ranks had blank collar tabs, but as stated there are legal restrictions on the use of these images in Germany but you would think for the sake of realism and accuracy they would be allowed in a production as quality as this. The man in question is SD (Sicherhietdienst) which was the security service of the SS run by Reinhard Heydrich.
