Tesco to launch own-brand smartphone this year

Tesco is to launch its first own-brand smartphone by the end of the year.

The BBC understands the phone will run Google's Android software, and the specification will be comparable to phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Chief executive Philip Clarke told BBC Radio 5 live's Wake Up to Money programme the device would be pre-installed with Tesco services.

The smartphone plans follow the launch of a Tesco's tablet, the Hudl - which has sold half a million units so far.

A refreshed version of the Hudl tablet - the Hudl 2 - will be released in September, Mr Clarke said.

The Hudl tablet entered the the lower end of the market, priced at £119 and competing with devices that had relatively low specifications.

However, the smartphone is expected to be comparable to the higher-end of the market - but aggressively priced.

Well I wasn't expecting this. From the sounds of things it looks like it will have high end specs yet priced agressively, possibly to compete against the Nexus line?

Would you like to buy a Tesco phone with Tesco features built in?

The Tesco branded software puts me off. That said any custom software puts me off any device which is why I only go to the Nexus line.
Interesting to see what this will be like though.

I think the hudl tablet had a mostly stock version of Jelybean, it just had some Tesco bloat pre installed.

The tesco app team I have a fair amount of respect for. The apps have improved from what I would consider boarderline awful to exemplary in around 12 months. Phones are a decent bit harder to make then tablets but then there's more OEM choice so it will be interesting to see who they pick as the manu this time around. My money is on ZTE with a mediatek, 2GB RAM, 4.5" 720p screen and 16GB onboard. All these components have dipped in price recently and would represent a fairly low risk OEM solution. I don't like the tesco button being part of the systemUI but I imagine it will remain. Just enough space on that sort of screen, will roughly align with what's expected from the iPhone 6 and nice and cheerful.

the tesco bloatware and limited market, meaning possibly less modders, put me off the hudl so i paid more and went for the nexus 7 and i havent needed to mod it.

i think the same would go for a phone, although google are starting to increase their own bloatware at the moment, with things like play movies, games, books, music, newsstand.

Not exactly going to make all those Moto G owners upgrade, really it needs to be a 5` Full HD 4G phone to compete/be comparable to the Nexus 5/GS5.
