BMW M5 "Jahre" limited edition

I like subtle understated design, but this looks very very underwhelming, could easily be a 520d. Would've expected something a bit more special and extravagant for an anniversary edition.

Go to a BMW dealer and sit in a 5 Series and you'll see and feel the difference. The difference is night and day.

Errr pretty much the only similarity beyond the fact it has a screen on it is... the BMW badge. They are quite different. So much so that the interior of the original 1 Series is probably the BMW interior I dislike the most, whereas the F10 is second only to the 6 Series for me.

It's completely different!

So the 5 series' centre console doesn't go (from top to bottom): i-drive, vents, climate control/radio, storage compartment, gear stick and then an i-drive knob?

I'm not arguing it doesn't look nicer due to better integration (i-drive) and nicer materials (suede/stitching etc) but to my eyes the design is fundamentally the same.

Other than the cheap plastics in the 1 series what did you dislike so much about it? It's not as if the air con button was in the boot? The thing I hated most about it was my head hitting the roof and feeling claustrophobic. ;(
 
Most cars go vent, radio, heater controls, storage (because this is where the angle changes) gearstick though, there is only so much you can do with interior design, it still has to fit that basic premise, the radio wouldnt work in the rear footwell and the gearstick would suck in the boot.

The layout is similar but so is every other car on the road. Would you prefer the iDrive to be in the footwell or the gear lever in the glovebox :p

Ok Ok Ok, forget my comparison; I just think the design is boring but it's nicely finished. :)

A car like this and removal of the speed delimiter is an option??!! That's a step too far in the big options swindle, surely.

I assume to keep the Government and car regulation in check and by offering it as an option they don't upset too many people?

That crossed my mind, but then I thought - surely it's either legal or it's not, and if it is, then using pressure groups as an excuse is just cynical. But then I'm very probably wrong!

It's the old "gentlemen's agreement" nonsense. In Germany where you have the Autobahn it will reduce carbon emissions and possibly reduce fatalities but here in England where doing over 100 is risky if you want to continue driving it seems a bit pointless.

It is quite a big jump in quality, actually... pictures don't do it justice, you have to sit in one... nicer place to be, for sure.

Although having driven the "normal" edition... I'd only buy one if I had kids... even then, I'm sure they could fit ok in the back of an M3 or 911 for a good few years :P

The turbos kill the car for me, I really don't like the feel, the V10 NA M5 was better :)

Have you even been in one? The BMW is much more ergonomic, the Merc will have your arms aching after a short drive, they're just not so well designed... BMW remember to think about the driver as a driver, Merc seem to think of the driver as a passenger... and that just, doesn't work ;)

It's absurd... it costs 3000 francs to remove the electronic limiter over here (a shade over £2000)!!!

Just to clarify I didn't say it wasn't nicer (it quite obviously is) it is just evolutionary not revolutionary compared to an old 1 series and to my eyes at least a bit boring/sedate etc :)
