Please help me pick the right smartphone for the job

If you think BlueTooth will give you a brain tumour then you should probably stop using all mobiles right now. Wired headsets are an example of an antenna and are surely worse for sending EM waves into your noodle anyway :) You don't need AV.

I would avoid that shop like the plague if I were you, reviews online of them are pretty much universally bad. It appears they are actually based in Hong Kong and they seem to have at least 2 online shop fronts - Expedite Electronics and Simply Electronics seem to be the same company.

I found them when looking for a phone recently as well as they were a good £70 cheaper than everyone else, but thought better of it. It appears the saying "If it seems too good to be true..." may apply here, I'd stick to a UK retailer.

I just did a search on eb for "Samsung note 8 4g" they are available there for decent prices, you should be able to trust a vendor with 99% or over on their positive feedback score if they have over 500 fb as seller, you will also find cases and other accessories on eBay.

I would like to read these reviews. Can you please give me a link or links for these reviews?

I think you may not be correct. A wired headset is not connected to the antenna at all as far as I know and will keep the radiation from the tablet a safe distance from your body and more importantly your brain.
Can you tell me what you mean by AV please ?

I went to the Samsung website to check out the full specs of the SM P605 but I could not find any! I downloaded the manual but I could not find the specs there either.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/SM-P6050ZWABTU
Where can I find the full specs of this tablet?

I found powerstarelectronics on eBay selling the SM-P605 for £432.99 including delivery and shipped from the UK. Check it out here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-G...=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item1c4023a3a8

Any comments?
It puzzles me why it costs about £100 less if you buy it from USA or hongkong. Any idea why?

What else would you advise me to buy along with it?
I have a GiffGaff SIM card. Will the SM P605 take this sim card?
Memory card?
I read somewhere that:
This Samsung device accepts memory cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB. Depending on the memory card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with your device. Some memory cards may not be fully compatible with the device. Using an incompatible card may damage the device or the memory card, or corrupt the data stored in it.
Can you tell me what kind of memory card to buy from eBay ?

I am so grateful to each and every one of you. You have saved me a lot of hassle.

AV = Anti Virus

And yes, as long as you stick to the Play store, you don't need one.

Full specs here: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_10_1_(2014_edition)-5677.php

Yes, when calling, it's in speakerphone mode.

A giffgaff SIM would be just fine. I have no idea if you can get away with a goodybag though... they're usually just for phones... no idea if they're allowed in tablets that also have phone functions... The £10 goodybag will be fine as it allows tethering, but not sure about the unlimited ones. You're not really doing tethering but you are using a tablet... Might need to check with giffgaff. Although their forums is a mess, most members gives very strange answers.

It takes micro SD card, however considering your usage you'll be fine with the internal memory. If you do plan to have loads of music on the tablet, then you may need the micro SD card.

As for the type of micro SD card, they're just stating that to cover the fake ones that are usually pretty poor quality. I've stuck with Sandisk and Samsung micro SD cards and they've been fine, but need to check the reviews to ensure they're the real deal and not a fake copy.

I've just bought a Nexus tab from Expedite at what seemed like a price that was too good to be true. Arrived in 7 days from an address in West Drayton, Middx and appears to be legit. I signed up and posted about it earlier on avforums because I took a risk and the only discussion I could find about Expedite was on there. Didn't know about this thread until it was mentioned on one of the replies today.

As I said over there, I can't comment on the returns process, but it was £55 less than at John Lewis and £15 less than the official seller on Amazon, so I was prepared to take the risk!

Fair comment, I may have been unduly harsh but tend to be a bit paranoid on more expensive Internet purchases and there seemed to be a lot of negative feedback on them.
Kudos for taking the plunge :D

Didn't mean it to come across like that... posting on a tablet for the first time so please bear with me :D

Payment was with Paypal and seemed to be covered by their guarantee in the case of a non-delivery, so I was prepared to risk it this time. I didn't know about the Simply thing until I saw it here.

Another thought.
I have an Epson printer that is not wifi enabled. If I buy the Samsung SM-P605 tablet, will I be able to simply plug the printer via the micro USB port?
If not, what printer, preferably Canon, should I buy that will work with this tablet?

Trigan

Not sure if that will work due to lack of correct drivers.

Not sure if this will work but perhaps enable printer sharing on the PC the printer is connected to, and see if this app can detect it? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=epson.print

I already have a Windows 7 desktop with printer with a WiFi hub. So far I have assumed that the Samsung SM-P605 is best for my needs. However if I bought myself a Windows 8 tablet, won’t that enable me to use the printer quite easily ? Won't it allow me to use any Windows based software e.g. Microsoft Word, that I have on my desktop directly?
Basically I would like to use a portable version of my deskotp outside in my garden when the sun is out and use it to read mass readings when I go to church daily.
What is your opinion on this?
If you think a Windows 8 tablet is a better option for my needs, can you advise me what model to buy?
Also can you give me a link that will show me what apps I can download? I want to make sure that they have a daily mass readings Windows app.

Not sure if Windows RT based tablets will work fine with your printer, but tablets with full fat Windows will, as it's just like a laptop but with no keyboard. I'm not sure you'll be able to call or text with these tablets however.

In all honesty, it sounds like it will be a lot easier if you had two seperate devices. One normal phone which you can use for calling and texting (will still have speech-to-text), and then a seperate tablet for your mass reading and office use.

The mass reading app you linked in your first post is complete, and requires no internet connection after you install it.

Assuming your wifi range extends to the garden, you probably won't need a tablet with mobile internet.

And if you do go with the 2 seperate device route, then perhaps 3 would be a better network, I think the One plans still offer unlimited tethering so you can connect your tablet to the phone via the wifi hotspot feature on the phone, so the tablet can use the phone's mobile internet. This way you can still use the tablet out and about, as long as the phone is also with you.

Thank you Orcvader.

A couple of important queries.

1. Can I use a power bank to charge up a tablet or a camcorder or a digital camera? What sockets / ports are needed on each ? If I bought myself the Samsung SM-P605, what is the best power bank that I can buy for it?
Power banks are something new to me. How do you use them? Are you supposed to keep the tablet and the power charger connected all the time when the tablet battery runs low?
With a fully charged power bank and a tablet that is very low on battery charge, how do you connect the two together? How long will the power bank keep its charge?

2. When I am using the tablet in church to read the mass readings, it will be necessary to ensure that I do not receive any phone calls during the Mass. Is this possible and if so, how do I ensure that the tablet remains quite silent and still during Mass?

Trigan

1) Yes you can, as long as you have a USB cable to connect to it. It will charge the device as if it was connected to the mains. Depending on the USB battery and your usage, it should charge the device fast enough. Anker is a pretty good brand, with usually a big battery yet being compact at the same time. However tablets can last a very long time, so you may not need one.

2) Just switch it to silent mode and all ringtone/notification sounds will be muted. You can also switch to airplane so it turns off all phone connections so you won't recieve any calls.

Thank you Orcvader.
I am still puzzled as to why a power bank is necessary unless that is you intend camping out in the desert where there isn’t any electricity.
If you are out and about, can’t you simply go to your local public library and plug your charger in and keep on using your tablet? They will even have free WiFi there as well. So you gain a bonus going there.
Will the tablet be able to be used as normal while the power bank is charging it?
How long does a tablet take to charge using a mains electricity charger? Any idea?

Trigan

Not everywhere provides free access to a plug socket, especially when you're out and about, so having a USB battery pack is handy. However, these are usually used for phones, not tablets, as a phone's battey life is significantly less than a tablet.

Yes, you can use the tablet as normal while charging, on the mains or the USB battery.

Assuming you're using the charger that came with the tablet, googling around shows 3/4 hours, but that's probably due to how big the battery in the tablet is. It should last you all day anyway, and you can charge it over night so it's ready to be used next day.

I still think this tablet is overkill for you needs :p.
