*** Official Nintendo Wii U thread ***

.. as for why I bought the Wii U, mainly for Bayonetta 2 which at the time was due for release a couple of months after the console, still waiting!!! that and I buy every console :)

Not long to go....

...but I don't remember there ever being a release data announced for Bayonetta 2, we only got the first gameplay trailer at last E3. Maybe I missed something.

Have you tried The Wonderful 101?. It's similar to Bayonetta (obviously with a very different theme), it's from the same development team, and one of Platinum Games best.

There's not one game so far on the Wii U that I've actually enjoyed enough to complete or even play for more that an hour or so. Nintendo remind me of an old fashioned Santa that would still be giving kids toys made from wood, it's nice but not really wanted.

You seem to have quite specific tastes and I'm not sure why you buy these games, but it's OK to just not like a game, even if it is very good and highly rated among most. Not everyone is the same.

I'm not a huge fan of GTA5 for example, but it's a very good game.

I'm going to go out on a limb, but I thought the GC had more top games than the N64, and good 3rd party support too. Things like Viewtiful Joe, Baten Kaitos, Ikaruga, Twin Snakes, BG&E, Resident Evil games - all third party exclusives (I think - BG&E may not have been).

Each to their own :) I loved the GC btw. The original Super Monkey Ball was one of the best games of that gen! In addition to what you mentioned - Killer 7, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario, Wave Race, Pikmin, Eternal Darkness. Anyone who missed out on the GC missed out big time!

However, the N64 was just god tier. Mario 64, Zelda OoT, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Pilot Wings, Wave Race, 1080, Jet Force Gemini, No Mercy, Konker's Bad Fur Day, Wave Race, IIS, Banjo Tooie/Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Blast Corps, Smash Bros. - it goes on and on. Our Playstation literally gathered dust! Rare deserve much of the credit - for that period of time they were the only game developer that could match Nintendo. Infact, has any developer produced as much quality as they did on the N64 in any generation?

To get slightly back on topic - I think the Nintendo consoles have consistently gotten worse since the N64 as they lost 3rd party support and started to focus more on party titles over more traditional games. The WiiU looks like it may close the gap, but it has a long way to go before it can be another GC, let alone close to another snes/N64.

Yeah when the Wii U came out, Bayonetta was scheduled for a February release or somewhere close to that, hope that info is right as I can't wait to play it, loved the first one.

I was looking forward to the Wonderful 101 but after playing the demo I just didn't like the controls and ended up cancelling my pre-order :(

Just admit it - the console isn't for you - why don't you just sell it and move on.

You didn't like anything, you can't play anything for more than an hour, you complain about the pad, you threw a hissy fit when you needed the pad in 3D World, you struggle with W101 controls, you're already lining yourself up to be the only person on planet earth that will have some sort of an issue with MK.

You'll cry like a baby when Bayo comes and you don't like the odd bit of button mashing cut-scenes or other quirks like using the stylus or whatever - it's going to give you a stroke when it's not to your liking.

It's clearly not for you - sell it and let someone else enjoy it. :)

I think my own issue with this, is that Nintendo have never made any games that appeal to me.

The reason I bought a SNES wasn't because of any Nintendo games, it was because it had a near enough arcade quality port of SF2.
The N64 I skipped entirely because I had a playstation, and the GameCube I bought for Resident Evil remake and RE 4.

There is certainly nothing on offer from Nintendo that interests me in the slightest at the moment.

The only reason I was tempted by a Wii U was for Zombie U, but when it looked that was going to be a bit rubbish I cancelled my Wii U preorder.

You're probably right but I hope you're wrong when it comes to Mario Kart!

Review embargo lifts in 6 days - so we'll see what the reviewers make of it soon enough but we already know EDGE have given it a 9 - so that's promising - they're not famed for being generous with their scores. :)

Now debating monster hunter instead of wind waker as my free game, and get wind waker later

Never played a monster hunter but it looks like my sort of game, apparently not easy for beginners though. I did try the 3ds demo and found it controlled horribly for my tastes but i imagine once your used to it, it would improve, plus wii u may differ

Monster hunter is very much my type of game but I found the controls but mainly the camera very annoying. There is a demo available if you have the chance to play before buying.

If you've never played WW, it's awesome.

I wish MH3 appealed to me, but I've no friends to play it. I'd play with Zefan, but he only buys consoles to look at.

MH3 is excellent, but it's not for everyone. Slow, measured fighting -not a million milse from Demon's/Dark Souls - and a shed load of content. Including some grinding for materials. It's great with a few friends and rewarding working out how to take down the big beasties. If you haven't played Wind Waker, though - get it! It's beautiful :D

i am a massive soul series fan which is why im not put off by its difficult learning curve i suppose, but im still hesitant

*edit

Windwaker is my favourite zelda game, the haters can do one lol

I believe the GamePad Screen/Stylus play method in Bayo 2 is only (an option) for easy mode.
The game will be fully playable with the Pro Controller (or with the gamepad while ignoring the screen etc.)

W101 also allows you to use Pro Controller only.

The controls are good but intentionally complex. It's a game that requires you to really learn control execution and understand it's gameplay design mechanics in order to become adept. It doesn't help that the Tutorials in the game are terrible but there are some great fan created tutorials on youtube. Once you find the groove it's extremely rewarding and fun.

I got W101 at the same time as the console so I haven't played the demo, but i heard it's not a great representation of the actual game.

It's seriously one of the most "hardcore"(in a tradditional sense) games I've played in recent years. I'm still playing it on and off... not an easy game to 100% :o.

To get slightly back on topic - I think the Nintendo consoles have consistently gotten worse since the N64 as they lost 3rd party support and started to focus more on party titles over more traditional games.

I like that Nintendo do still target the more traditional gamers, but I agree, their focus on more casual and mainstream markets has no doubt meant less games for the core fans.
The overall mainstream trend, which Sony and MS latched on to, is as much to blame though. F-Zero GX is amazing, and one of my favourite games... but it just didn't sell that well and I imagine this is the main reason as to why their hasn't been another yet .

I kind of forgave Nintendo last gen after games like Galaxy 1 & 2, Xenoblade and DKC returns.

I'm quite satisfied with the Wii U so far with regards to traditional games. Aside from the more niche games already out(e.g. Pikmin3, W101), there's another Xenoblade on the way, and Nintendo stepped up to publish Bayonetta 2 when no one else would due to low sales of the first game.

But yeah, I still really want another F-Zero... or Waverace, or something.

That's the thing. Mario and Zelda will always come - although these are becoming more mass market friendly and less 'core' too - but where's a proper Pilot Wings? The chopped down 3DS version doesn't count. There was no excuse for not giving us an epic Star Fox on the Wii - it would have been perfect with a Wiimote! What about 1080? Like you said, where the **** are F-Zero and Waverace? Playing Waverace at times sent me into zen like levels of chilled outness. Then the weather would change and suddenly it was hard as nails. The water alone in that game was epic! I think Metroid Prime is the big hope for a hardcore WiiU title. It has to happen - and we'll have to put up with scanning using the joypad ;)

idk I feel Mario and Zelda still remain quite true to their origins (the hand holding in skyward sword was annoying though!). And imo Tropical Freeze is a better game than the original DKC games.

Mario, Zelda, Smash and Mario Kart have always sold well (MK Wii sold upward of 35M copies...) so makes sense we get more from these franchises.
F-Zero, Waverace, Starfox and 1080 sell quite poorly in comparison so it's hard for Nintendo to justify spending the resources to develop sequels to these games. Another victim of mainstream pop culture trends I guess :(.

I share your respect for Waverace... I was so addicted to blue storm.

We may not have got a Startfox shooter on Wii, but at least we got another Sin and Punishment.

I've never understood why FZero and Waverace don't sell well, I mean what's not to like?

I'd buy FZero, Waverace, StarFox, 1080 and pilotwings in heartbeat!
