AMD signs up 40 development studios for Mantle

I made lots of people buy that and many still have not forgiven me. :D

Our gaming clan started in AvP2 so we were so looking forward to this, got a few people to buy it as well and it constantly gets brought up :(

Still, it wasn't as bad as me getting about 9 people on my friends list to buy Lego Lord of the Rings because of the multiplayer and then only to discover it was local multiplayer only.

It looks like another studio might provide Mantle support, thought they've not officially announced it yet. Interestingly this was the exact same reply Crytek gave when asked about Mantle a few months back. Perhaps an omen. This time its Creative Assembly and the game is Alien Isolation. Looks like a scary, survival horror single player game and one for Aliens fans.

Unfortunately for our green friends they won't be adding Physx though.

lol @ "Want multi-vendor & multi-platform support".
If you're wishing for things that seem extremely unlikely to happen why not include things like "market domination", "only API used by all developers, ever" and "putting rivals out of business"! :)

Maybe it'll happen, but I can't see why Nvidia and Intel would get behind this AMD tech instead of DirectX 12 and hope that DX12 + lack of multi-vendor support relegates Mantle to OpenGL levels.

No one talking about "instead of DirectX 12" which has a lot to live upto and a lot to prove when it eventually shows up, Microsoft's gaming interest are on the Console, not the PC and DX11 is a pile of junk so don't get your hopes up.

I can't see why they'd do it as well as DirectX 12 either. Don't see what's in it for them.

And DX 11 has served me pretty well over the years. Currently it's done a hell of a lot more for my gaming needs than Mantle has. At the minute I wouldn't put a Mantle game in my top 10 list, or my top 20 list. Probably wouldn't get in my top 30 either if I sat down and made a top 30 list.

Everyone's being very quick to write off DX 12 just because it's not a PC exclusive. Should we write Mantle off as a Windows API if it starts supporting Linux and Apple OS's? I mean AMD have their hardware in consoles too, so do we just assume that AMD don't care about PC either?

AMD are bringing Console API's to the PC, something developers have been asking for for years with Microsoft refusing to do so.

MS have used their PC API dominance to hold the PC back, to stop it getting further ahead of their more profitable Console ECO system.

Since Mantle MS are now talking up the new API, DX12, because they have to, their PC API dominance is under threat, not just from Mantle but also OpenGL now getting more attention.

Their is no evidence that Microsoft's position has changed. Consoles are still their cash cow and PC Gaming is still an inconvenience to them.

Its a lot of noise from a company only interested in preserving their dominance so they can continue holding it back.

Aren't Microsoft also bringing a console API to the PC, it's just that they're bringing it to both at the same time. Why is one good but the other bad?

Who really cares why MS are releasing DX12?
I mean AMD didn't release the 290 until after the 780, so does that mean that AMD's had was forced by Nvidia bringing out new hardware? If it wasn't for Nvidia would AMD have let PC hardware stagnate to keep their console hardware more relevant?

What Microsoft are doing is making a lot of noise, what that noise turns into remains to be seen.
