Black screen after graphic drivers install

Hi all,

Yesterday I was about 20 minutes into playing Anno2070 when all of a sudden my PC froze up. After restarting, I kept getting past the windows 8 logo and then the screen would just go black before getting to the login screen. The monitor is still receiving a signal.

If I boot in safe mode it all works fine. Windows was saying something about none repairable files, so decided to do a fresh install as I only have windows and a couple of applications on my boot disk anyway. All was working well, until I start doing updates. During the updates my screen would just go black again.

I am guessing this is some driver related issue, as if I try and install anything that affects the graphics card, it just stops my pc from working.

Any ideas?

Ive had exactly the same thing today while playing War Thunder. Game crash, restart, I see the Asus ROG logo, loads windows then black screen but can load in to safe mode

Ive unistalled my drivers with catalyst and with DDU but to no avail. Ive even moved PCI slots and it still doesn't work!

Really starting to bug me.

I think windows did a small update in the background prior to playing Anno.

Running off my on board graphics atm trying to fix it.

Will post here if I find a fix!

Whats confusing me is that I haven't installed any updates and Ive made sure to have drive updates turned off. Interestingly, when it black screens during my install, its as it moves onto installing the display driver, after installing the hdmi audio adaptor and it plays the uninstall sound before crashing

Yeah.

Mine doesn't seem to work If in Device Manager / Display Adapter shows "AMD Radeon R9 200 Series". If It shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" It seems to work :S

Mine shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter but it won't let me install the drivers - just goes to a black screen :(

Me too :( seems odd that we've both got the same problem at the same time though.

What I don't understand is that windows 8.1 doesn't appear to have any drivers that I've installed (trawled through all the updates I have installed) and yet still keeps reinstalling a driver each time I 'uninstall' it, even if I don't have the internet plugged in or am in safe mode

I seem to have this in my windows update list.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 - AMD Radeon R9 200 Series
Installation date: ‎10/‎05/‎2014 22:14
Installation status: Succeeded
Update type: Important
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 software update released in December, 2013

Even though it's already installed, it wants to install again and again. :S

That seems odd. Mine always tried and failed to install it. Interestingly I just had a crash while trying to install that update just now :/

A few weeks ago I had the same in a game on windows 7. My 7970 made a high pitched noise and then froze. Subsequent reboots would show a black screen after the windows logo when I would normally expect to see the login box. I got similar in Linux. Mine turned out to be a hardware failure and I had a replacement after RMA to ocuk and MSI. Interestingly my original card had coil whine by the new one doesn't.

Well you both do not have Gigabyte Mobos so that is 1 less thing as soon as I read title I guess it is.

You both have the new AMD 2XX cards and there is a black screen issue if you want to look it up.

I would try under-clocking the VRam for now but others who had this issue needed a RMA (after making sure it was not any other aspects like software etc.

Edit, a guy the other day had same issue, I told him to try just the driver and no CCC but he does not think that is possible today (was in past).

I am sure recently someone found out it was CCC doing this to his card, not to say it is for all black screens though.

What is confusing me is that it happens even when windows is trying to install its driver for the r9 2xx series card.

Ive been running my card at stock. Havent overclocked it since Ive got it - tried a few runs on firestrike but that was it so I cant think that its memory related? Will make a customer service thing now

I have just tried my card in my flatmates machine which uses a 4670k and windows 7.

Unfortunately the same thing happens, though slightly differently. Put in the card and turn on - goes into windows and start to install drivers. Drivers install (unlike on mine on windows 8 which crashes as soon as it tries to install) and computer restarts but then goes to a black screen as soon as windows starts.

Popped his 7970 back in and works straight away

But it only black screens on installing the drivers? Ill try it tomorrow evening if i get time. Hope its not hardware :( bought the 290 thinking I won't need another for a couple of years :(

This is a known problem I had it on my 280X cards and it would work fine without drivers but as soon as I installed them would get black screens,

It turned out the cards were faulty due to bad VRAM, do a Google search it's been a issue ever since the new cards were released.

How long after installing your card did this happen? Ive had mine since january, seems odd that it'd just happen now??

Had a similar problem occur.

I fixed it by booting in safe mode, removing the current drivers witht he AMD cleaner tool, and then installing the previous version driver. Seems the "current" drivers have issues.

Any graphic drivers crash my card by the looks of it

Trying to RMA my card, but having issues as I don't have an order number to hand as I purchased it in store -.-
