Anyone gone back to w7?

just go with what you feels best for you.

win 8.1 is a better os but takes a bit of getting used to, certainly not the train wreck its been made out to be. With a bit of time and patience it can be set-up brilliantly.

I've taught my partners 60 year old parents how to use it in about an hour, gave them the option of going back to windows 7 and they outright refused.

I needed a re-install so went back to Win7 (as I was only using the desktop parts of Win8 anyhow!!) and it's great, like a breath of fresh air

Just glad it's got support til 2020, we might need it!!! :p

That's the problem we DON'T need it,just some users need to justify it some how,end of the day I would never go back to Win7 and even put Linux before 7 on my install list which I have done on a few PCs :) .

I wonder if some users can handle Win9 or 10 etc or will they stay in the past forever,I know I have no issues with moving forward regardless.

In fairness you might have old hardware without W8 support. I've a dual xeon machine and those cpu don't support w8. Old laptop with ati card the same.

I was mainly referring to those that have gone from 8 to 7,obviously if they were on 8 then their hardware is fine.

I can see no real reason to go from 8 to 7 unless you NEED specific software to run that does not with 8/8.1.

So far after a few days of using 8.1 I'm actually getting to grips with it and enjoying using it. I've added Classic Shell just to make the learning curve a bit less extreme and I have to say that compared to my Windows 7 install, 8.1 feels a lot more 'zippier' in performance. Folders seem snappier to open, tasks and programs seem to execute quicker although it may all be a placebo. I've got 8.1 installed on a separate SSD so I can swap between it and my other SSD with Windows 7 on it at startup using the F8 key to select the boot drive. Still haven't worked out the non booting from cold issues though. Despite a completely fresh install of 8.1 yesterday, when booting up from cold it rarely starts first time. Usually second time and sometimes requires a third hard reset but I'm now guessing a hardware issue is the cause although god knows what! Having said all that, I think I'll stick with 8.1 for a bit longer to see how it goes. I may not go back to W7 especially if I can solve my boot issues (doesn't happen with the W7 install on the other SSD I have to say). And here was me saying I'd never try Windows 8 as it was a nightmare to work with. That I have to say with hindsight, is completely untrue. :)

Have a look in Event Viewer or Reliability History to see if any issues there,it could be something simple as a driver issue.

Btw last time I had boot issues on Win8.1 it was a bluetooth driver(I updated it and issue solved).

Worth a try, cheers. Will have a look.

Depends if they are an improvement on Windows 7 I guess.

I find it weird that people are happy to install Chrome to use instead of Internet Explorer, but have a problem with installing a installing an app to get back to the Classic Windows on Windows 8.

I using Windows 8.1, but only due to 3rd party software engineers, if it wasnt for them then id still be on 7, my 8.1 looks like 7, im using Startisback for the start menu and AeroGlass to bring back the.........well.........Aero theme, I hate the metro theme and cant understand for the life of me why m$ thought for one moment its what desktop users with a mouse and keyboard wanted, goes to show how out of touch they really are, its solely designed for touchscreens.

Now it looks more like 7, im quite enjoying it, especially the very fast boot speeds, dont have any driver issues and everything seems to be running nice and stable.

The cynical side of me thinks it's an attempt to drum up some marketshare for Microsoft's phones and tablets by using their desktop marketshare to drive people towards the ecosystem.

But of course, we know the lovely and not at all insane Steve Ballmer wouldn't do such a thing.

So I guess it's just down to not wanting to pay two separate development teams to come up with operating systems for use on touchscreens and standard desktop computers.

Its not even that good on touchscreens either - infact a few things aside normal desktop mode is perfectly useable on a 1280x800 8" tablet and would be 100% useable if it had been tweaked minorly to enhance touchscreen use.

The more I use 8 the more I completely don't understand people defending it, I can see that for some users the start screen when properly organised could be an advantage for the way some people work with an OS but completely doesn't provide any benefit for me and infact is less efficent for my useage, the rest mostly seems a step backwards from Windows 7 the only thing I really like is the new file copy dialog with the speed graph.

Old excuse,I remember the old 2K via XP thread(very heated that was) in another forum, point is some people will always find something to moan about and others don't like change regardless, improvement is all relative ie some can handle Windows or Linux quite easily while others struggle even on simple things even in XP or Win7.

I can understand some people not liking an OS but don't tell me Win8 is hard to use because its a piece of cake,Windows has been for quite a long time.

I'm not saying Win8 or any OS is perfect, no OS is but fact remains its not rocket science.

Regardless got my front seat booked for Win9 and 10 etc to see what some users can't handle.

As to defending I was one that defended Win95,Win98,XP (to 2K users) Vista etc so it just continues,I probably be defending Win9 and 10 which is kind of ironic being more of a DOS and Linux fan(yes defended Linux too).

I sometimes wonder do some users actually use their brain with any OS or just give up soon as they hit the on button.

Anyway roll on Win9 at least that'll be a new moan thread to debate over for some users.

There are two types od change.

A change for the good.

A change for the worse.

Microsoft can give me all of the former that they like. In fact, come at me bro with it.

But if they're going to go for the latter, it stands to reason it'll get rejected.

Don't get me started,I almost wish I was back to using Amiga OS or DOS ;) ,

I still have fond memories of RISC OS 3 heh - tbh never felt any OS had matched it until Windows 7 even 95-XP were junk in comparision IMO. Never really used Amigas.

Folks, I've finally managed to track down what was causing my booting to a completely black screen. It was 'Faststart'. I disabled it and now the PC will boot up perfectly, every time. Doesn't seem to have made any difference to boot times either, still very quick, quicker than W7 was.
