AMD Could Feature Next Generation HBM Memory on Volcanic Islands 2.0 Graphics Cards – Allegedly Laun

Don't really see what AMD is trying to achieve with this, considering even if they released a new card that's slightly faster and cheaper than the GTX780Ti, majority of the people would still rather spend a bit more money getting the GTX780Ti instead (similar to 290 vs GTX780); if the new AMD card is priced higher than the GTX780Ti, it is not going to shift.

So again, I don't know what AMD's thinking.

If its faster and cheaper than the TI a lot will buy it. if its a fair chunk faster and slightly more expensive still a lot will buy it.
290X's got a crap start really in the press etc with the cooler (which i think we all agree was not the best) And the press sample thing aswell and the revised fan speed( sorry mud sticks even if its not true(
If AMD have a good cooler and a good card at a reasonable price at launch it will sell dont worry

i think AMD is simply trying to turn the page on the Hot&Loud reference designs, and for that they will probably rebrand 290s, into something with higher clock, maybe better OC headroom, and especialy Cool&Quiet, they said that they learned their lesson from the 7990 and lately the 290s, and that they wont make that mistake again, started with the 295x2, beside the 290 series are really good cards, just those stupid reference makes them look cheap, and tank most benchs.
for me this is a good idea, AMD need to adresse the reference design quality

Nice to see AMD making a new card to take on the 780 Ti and the Titan Black

If it's only 5% faster than the Ti and then Nvidia launch another GPU 5% faster than the Radeon card, is even worth bothering with?

I mean if the new cards were only 5% faster but also on 20nm at least that would give a big power reduction / possible more overclock headroom..

5% still on 28nm... A very big meh...

Damn boom shaping up to be a expensive year for you :)

Lol, if these new cards from AMD / Nvidia are still on 28nm I'll pass. Just gonna do the CPU / Mobo upgrades this year. If they do drop 20nm then yep it will be an expensive year :p

AMD to launch new flagship Radeon graphics card this Summer

I wonder if this could be a full fat Hawaii core. There were rumours that there is part of the XT chip missing and the full amount will take it to around (roughly) 3000 shaders. If this is true, the reference cooler won't cut it so unless they've designed a new cooler expect this to be a AIB cooled card only. My two cents.

AMD won't make same mistake twice. New card will be launched by AIB's using their coolers which can more than adequately cool such a card. :)

I called it correctly then. Thanks Gibbo. :)

Do you know anything about this card?

From that perceptive, a re-designed card with stacked memory (Lower power use) and better cooling (Replace awful 29X coolers) will be a good move from AMD. Anybody buying this year will have an incentive over other cards.

So 28nm is pretty much confirmed then?

Whatever it may be I think it will be pushed back into next year. I'm normally not wrong

:p

If it's 28nm and a re-design rather than a whole new architecture no reason why it shouldn't launch this year. Nvidia rumored to have something coming on 28nm as well. It all makes sense lol. Let the milking commence!

They might do what they did with the 7950, and launch them with aftermarket coolers from the get go.

Yeah, after the bashing the ref blower got last time it would make sense for them to ensure this ticks all the boxes, but after the 295X2 it seems they are taking reference cooling seriously now.

The 7990 had a triple fan design, they took reference cooling serious for that, but went back on the R9 290.

So we'll see really when their next gen stuff comes out (On the die shrink)

True but that's because the R290 cooler was basically the HD7900 cooler with a new shroud (which itself dates back to the 5xxx series IIRC). The HD7990 and R295X2 coolers are definitely steps forwards.

If it uses stackable memory, I will be interested to see how that works in terms of speed but seriously bored of 28nm. I wouldn't buy another 28nm card unless they can get at least 50% speed over the current crop.

I love GPU wars and great to see AMD releasing a card to try and beat the 780 Ti. Interesting times ahead and with AMD being the price performance king, will we see the new card at a fair price?

Time will tell

28nm TSMC 1H 2014 : Hawaii, VI 1.0
28nm GlobalFoundries 2H 2014 : Iceland and Tonga, VI 2.0
28nm GlobalFoundries 1H 2015 : Maui, VI 2.0
20nm GlobalFoundries 2H 2015 : Fiji and Treasure, PI 1.0
20nm GlobalFoundries 1H 2016 : Bermuda, PI 1.0
14nm GlobalFoundries 2H 2016 : Mid-GPU and Low-GPU, PI 2.0
14nm GlobalFoundries 1H 2017 : High-GPU, PI 2.0

Am I reading this right? High end 300 series in 1st half 2015 on 28nm with high end 400 series 1st half 2016 on 20nm?

Would a large performance jump be expected with the change from 28nm to 20nm? Or is it simply a matter of running cooler and less power hungry?
