Box to 'stream' from PC to TV

I've been using my WDTV Live! HD since they came out, and I've never had a problem running wireless. I changed the firmware to something I found floating around on the net, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Be aware that these newer boxes like Roku and WD TV (live and play) will NOT play most older formats like divx/xvid/mpg etc. Only newer formats like MKV etc. If, like me, you enjoy watching your old libraries, you'll want something better like a Popcorn Hour. I use an A210 and there are newer models that have wifi etc. They play literally everything including newest MKVs etc. but also all the old stuff, and are rock-solid. They cost a lot more but there you go.

Roku 3 plays every file type i've thrown at it including the ones youve mentioned, you just need the Plex app, which was £2.50 iirc

He came on after asking for cheaper alternatives - read the thread.

I wouldn't say the Pi is cheaper either, by the time you've bought everything including a remote it probably works out dearer.

WD live player, £70 or so?

Raspberry Pi just over £30 with a memory card. You don't need to buy a remote providing you have a smartphone - can use a free app for control. Or ofcourse HDMI-CEC if your TV supports it.
Power for the Pi is something most people will own already if they have a smartphone (bar iPhones) and if not you can get easily get a charger for less than a fiver.

I have a smart tv so i use the plex app.

If i did not have a smart tv i would use my laptop which just collects dust on the shelf

If i decided to throw away my laptop when the HDD broke instead of buying a new HDD + Power Adapter and then putting it back on the shelf.

Id get a raspberry pi and plex or mabye xmbc, my server is running plex already.

If you can link me to a full cheap setup of a Pi and not using my phone as a remote then I'll buy one for my gym.

Don't really know anything about using separate remotes I'm afraid. Using the xbmc app on my phone covers everything I'd ever want for the amount I use the Pi. Better off asking about that in the Pi Thread

Both RS Online and Farnall have the type-B Pi + an 8GB sd card for £33.

Add in a 1.2A micro usb charger if you haven't already got one and you're sorted :)
