**The big ol' Z97 thread!**

Went ahead and bought the Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H-BK along with a Gigabyte GTX 780 Windforce OC and also a i5 4670K.

Was going to wait until the Refresh i7 came out but decided rather get a cheaper CPU now and put the saved money towards a new Broadwell i7 in the new year.

Also have some Kingston Beast 8GB 2400Mhz Ram bought earlier in the month form OCUK when £45.99.

Any reason you went with the Gigabyte board over the Asus Hero?

Hi which ones are throttled down?

Pretty much all boards are using 2 lane M2 Ports, there is some boards reported as using 4 lanes as the spec says is max. I think someone posted on the forums saying that it was Asrock... I think

OFC that's working on the basis that you can get one of the two (that I know of) 4 lane M2 SSD HD's which from other peoples comments is rarer than unicorn poop!

LOL, even more confused now, had no idea that some m2 SSD HDs were tiered as well as the lane allocation on some Z97 mobos.

Decided on the Gigabyte over the Hero partly for the extended warranty and excellent support from gigabyte and also because I wanted a level of future proofing that the Gigabyte offers with M.2 and SATA Express.

If the Hero had come with M.2 or SATA express I would still be in two minds about which to buy.

Not sure if serious?

The Hero DOES have an M.2 connector...

My mistake had it firmly set in my head that it did not have M.2 and I had checked the specs numerous times.

I am happy going with the Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H-BK as it meets my needs.

MSI Gaming 5 vs 7? With the deal the Gaming 5 comes in at £85 after cash back ... is very very tempting as it means I can get some other goodies as well.

Can anyone who has a little more knowledge tell me the difference between the two boards aside price?

You can compare them both on the MSI website ;]

The 7 has:

2 more SATA ports
More USB ports (2 less USB 2 ports on the back, extra internal header and more USB3 8 vs 4 on the back panel)
Optical SPDIF out on the IO panel
2x HDMI 1x DP vs 1x VGA 1x DVI-D 1x HMDI

I think but not certain is has on board power and reset buttons, OC Genie button and 9x V-Check connectors (whatever they are) and a multi bios switch
USB Redrivers to allow you to use longer usb3.0 cables in bigger cases
Also looks like it has a debug LED which the 5 doesn't

Looks like neither has SATA Express but both have a M.2 if that was a concern when shopping for a z97 board.

how are you? not seen you on tweaktown for a while

hey dude, yeah i haven't been much to be honest with you. They are spreading me a bit thin LOL

Was looking at some of the article stats on blogger and saw someone put up a link from OCUK. I thought, jeeeez I haven't swung past the forum for a while sheeeesh.

Looks like you boys are getting into some new gear over here. Ahh the smell of new silicone, can't go wrong :D

Really good review. From what I can gather from this and the other reviews on this board. The auto overclock function in the bios aswell as the software version are pretty naff, with putting too much voltage.
Ive never manually overclocked, I currently have a Asrock board that I have used there auto overclock feature and its been like A....Rock at 4.6ghz for about 2 years now.
I want to give a manual overclock ago on the gigabyte board (no choice really) is there any good guides that is easy to understand. I know the board has only come out but surely the principle is the same for any overclocking.

I can help too, I may be a total amateur but I have dabbled here and there.

Its essentially the same as Z87

Cheers ill take you up on that offer when the time comes, if I get stuck.
I found a video by linustechtips and I just finished watching and it looks pretty easy.

That's what I figured overclocking on a z97 should be pretty much the same as a z87 except we should get better results.
Ill be getting the 4970k and cooling it with a corsair H105.
