Looking to replace the Panasonic 50 inch G10 I currently have with something a bit bigger. I have been looking at the Panasonic 55ST60 as it should be an improvement in all areas on the existing TV, however I would ideally like something a little bigger as viewing position is approx 16-17ft away.

I prefer plasmas but it seems that hardly anyone makes them anymore. Panasonic do a 60 inch ZT but that's more than I want to spend. Have the LCD's caught up on picture quality and blacks compared to plasmas? I am looking at ideally spending around £1k, £1.5k absolute max. Is there anything in this budget that gets me what I am after or is the 55ST60 the best compromise?

If you like plasmas have a look around for a while - there must be a decent Samsung/Panny in your budget somewhere. If not, I'd go for a Sony LED but not the latest w955 as it has a lesser lg panel.

Plasma is officially dead, even though it's still superior to LCD in terms of PQ.

It's been dead for around 6 months now, so it's really hard to get a cheap decent one brand new.

Either pay up or buy LCD or wait for OLED (superior than plasma) to come down in price.

not seen a LCD that I liked in the past, but haven't looked at anything for a few years, so wasn't sure if they had caught up the gap, especially as all the investment has been in LCD rather than plasma.

So I take it LCD's still can't get close on PQ and blacks then?

It depends who you listen to and what you want ;) I picked my Sony LED over the highest end Panny and Samsung panels around at the time and am still happy with the move. When it comes to black levels and 3 dimensionality, though, plasmas still come out on top, and if you're happy with the shortcomings of plasma I would still urge you try and find one. Is second hand an option?

depends on your own personal environment, what you define as close, etc, etc.

they are far better for things like high ambient lighting, image retention, thinner, lighter, power consumption, etc, etc.

but in terms of PQ they have got a lot better but not as good as plasma.

you should have bought a new tv at the very latest at the turn of the year or last year when their was stonking deals available, I myself bought a GT50 brand new last year for £799 including 3D glasses ( worth £110 iirc and don't come with TV as standard like the VT and ZT series) and a 5 year warranty, etc.

the ST60 is basically the new GT50 but with terrible input lag so it's no good for gaming at all, they done that on purpose so gamers would be forced to spend more money on a GT60 or above.

Personally I would now wait it out for OLED to hit reasonable prices or until your current TV dies or buy LCD if you need something bigger now.

I recently changed my old LG 50" Plasma for a Sony KDL55W905.. 3D, fantastic picture and can be had for well under £1500

no interest in paying extra for 4k. I will no doubt have upgraded the TV again by the time I actually have any material to play on it.

I would rather have the better picture of the panasonic st60 plasma for less money as that samsung is the same size anyway.

The baby 55 Samsung 4k hit sub £1000 today (May) not a TV I would buy but shows just how quickly the 4Ks are dropping in price. (note the euro version of the one already in this thread)

If you really do not want 4K of course they will have to drop the price on older models to match the very aggressive pricing on the 4Ks so either way wait a little bit longer if you can.

My brother in law has bought the 50ST60 and is disappointed with the motion in things like football and fast panning shots.

For £1200 the Sony 55w905 is a great buy and delivers exceptional picture quality, quidco also have 10% cashback on TVs over £1,000 which finishes today. You can collect in store which is what I did.

You can also add 3 or 5 years warranty through Sony and when you register the TV they give a 20% discount code making it either £32 or £98.

your brother in law probably hasn't set his tv up correctly.

look at settings on avforums

This is in the bedroom, so nope not moving the bed!

not bothered about gaming or 3D. TV will be used for mix of TV/DVD/Bluray.

In your position upgrading from a 50" to a 55" seems a waste IMO, especially if your going from panny plasma to LCD, there will be a decrease in PQ I imagine so tbh it has to be 60" or bigger.

What is your budget and can you afford a top spec 60"+ screen which will give you comparable PQ to a panny plasma?

It doesn't matter your panny plasma is old, I went from a Z85B (which is older than yours) to a GT50 and tbh the PQ difference had nothing in it tbh it was the extra size that made the difference.

Buy 60"+ otherwise stick with what you have, an extra 5" won't make much of a difference IMO, especially when you consider what your paying for that 5 inch upgrade it works out to £200-£300 per inch, which is just madness IMO.

Hence this thread and trying to find something 60" that's comparable. A 60 inch Panny would be great, but don't want to spend that much on a bedroom TV. Hoping someone suggests something I have missed that's around 60 inch but not £2k+, if they did at 60 inch ST60 that would be great!
