Kinectless Xbox One announcement today.

So hidden away at the bottom of the image for *, it says that Xbox Live Gold no longer required for most apps and features, including Netflix, ESPN and YouTube starting in June. I guess everything under "Available on Xbox" no longer needs Gold?

edit: Except cloud game saves on 360 which still requires Gold.
Yup best part of the announcement,

Guess you have to thank the leaders of xbox at the time. New leaders, new vision, new direction.

In Phil We Trust.
What has changed in Phil from him being Head of MGS during a period of time with a reduction of first party output to him being the Head of Xbox? A change is good as anything - think its way too early to make a judgement considering past performance and undoubtely a hand in XOs conception...

Very unexpected, but a good move. Most of Kinect's merits so far seemed to be in voice control rather than anything to do with actually playing games on the thing, so a cheaper SKU for those who aren't interested in that will be more than welcome.

It does of course lessen the chances of Kinect being used effectively in more games, although realistically I can't see it having a huge impact. The top-selling games will presumably continue to have Kinect functionality tacked-on as they would have anyway, it isn't going to make a difference to most players whether it's there or not.

I think this has way more to do with sales than Phil.

MS needed to price cut but XB1 is barely making money for MS as it is so the only way they could drop the price significantly was to remove the Kinect which is rumoured to cost them $100+

Unsurprising, they were losing badly to Sony and titanfall seems to have performed much worse than expected. £350 in the UK is a joke though considering you could get the titanfall bundle cheaper than that a few weeks ago which included a kinect.

Effectively the same price for a weaker console with no distinguishing features.

It was a promotion for a limited time though, not a sustainable price.

I honestly think most people that had issue with Kinect was more about the bottom line price point than Kinect itself. With MS and the unofficial price drops surely that issue was on its way to resolve itself?!?

I still think a large number of people used that differator to poke fun at the XO and had little intention to buy it with our without Kinect.

I'm annoyed MS have gone about it the way they had, it really doesn't sound like they have confidence in what they eventually launched. Today's decision just give them price parity with the PS4 but little else beyond that - it makes more sense, to me, to force Kinect (if that was their end game?) via bundling with the XO combined with a lower price point.

I really hope the Kinect voice unit gets encapsulated in the redesign whenever they do that. That was the best part of Kinect...

Sorry I was directly replying to anti regards what appears to be a welcomed change of leadership at Xbox by wondering what's actually really changed other than the old Head being the scapegoat.

From reading GAF, and looking at what he has said, it looks like he wants to get on the good side of gamers again and is using his new position to try to achieve that goal.

It was just a handy argument for people to use who, in my opinion, had no intention of buying an xbox. Those same people will just now say, I'm not buying an under powered machine, one thing that is never going to change.

I think we'll see retailers pushing this out at sub £300, logic would dictate a £299 price tag, not bad at all imo.

The games with gold arriving in June is great news, as are sales on specific titles. I wonder if we'll see the PS4 under £300 any time soon, can't be that far away.

I'm sorry, but this just shows more incompetence from the management of the Xbox division. They should just sell the whole thing to some other company who's got a clue about these things.

They really haven't gotten anything right with this Xbox One saga. Its like a poisoned chalice. Even Nintendos' management of the Wii U is rating much higher than MS right now.

It was an argument I myself used too, but I caved on the Titanfall bundle for £369. Funnily enough I just sold my Kinect, I hope with this announcement an update will follow that removes the 'Kinect not plugged in' on the home screen :)

That's a pretty big hyper bowl you have there.

It would be pretty much nailed on to happen.
