Sony stopping pc production

Are there no British manufacturers? I suppose with the small profit margins there isn't much call for it, but it's a shame that there is no British equivalent of Dell/Lenovo/HP etc. I suppose they all use components manufactured by others anyway, so if I want British I might as well buy from OCUK.

I used to work for a company who provided all of the PC's for a lot of University's across the country, we even provided one of the server clusters for St.Andrews Uni, that and we provided kit for various Police stations and constabulary's and councils etc.

Sadly the company got brought out and merged with another company based in the UK, who are still running as far as I am aware.

I am very happy with Vaio Pro 13 I got in February and although it was expensive, there really wasn't much choice for a business ultrabook at least at the time - market wouldn't be huge though.

Pretty certain you mean Gateway :p?

nope thats the logo they had, I remember it well. They were very close in quality to TinyPc and they were bad. Its probably some obscure brand. Or am I mistaken. I am too lazy here at work to google though. Perhaps thats the nickname I gave them with the cow cube logo they had... meh

As with most markets now it's a race to the bottom quality wise with a a handful of dominant high end players.

Not good for somebody who simply wants something properly built, rather than fashionable-cool.

Spot the guy who secertly wants an iPhone but hates iOS so bought a HTC instead :p

Shame to see but any money in laptops and desktops are quickly shrinking. Dell, Lenovo and HP are dominating the market in the Business world. While Apple are growing in the consumer world.

I used to work for Evesham Technology and well they went in 2008ish and was sold to the Time/Tiny Group. Even with the popularity of the company and British status it still made huge losses.

You can still get something well built... is the unnecessary extra of it supposedly being 'cool' really a negative?

Mac make decent laptops despite the amount of butt hurt and controversy they seem to cause amongst some.

There is always a market for well built laptops amongst employers making bulk purchases.... they want something to be used for 8-10 hours a day for a few years... Dell etc.. will cater for them without the need to be cool.

The way they acted when they did go under doesn't leave me with any sympathy... taking orders they knew they'd never fill from joe public right up until the end. No doubt the actual stock that could have been sent to fulfil those orders was then sold off a second time by the receivers.
