I can't work in an office for the next 50 years...

Depends on your job. I do a bit of office work, working from home, and working in client's offices so not always in the same place which is generally more enjoyable.

Yeah, this. I spend probably 3 days a week on clients premises, and get treated like a guest at each one which is nice. Bit of work from home in the evenings and a later start the next morning.

I'm not yet bored of zipping around London.

This is where I am at the moment.

Have a good job and am paid well but starting to freak out that this is what I'm going to be doing for the next 25 years.

The wife and I have saved a decent amount to buy a house but I've held back as the pipe dream of chucking everything in and trying to make it abroad appeals more and more by the day.

Yeah! I'm the same, currently renting and have saved enough for a deposit on a flat but don't think I'm going to do it...

Yes I am ****ed. :D

That was more of a long term goal. I could move abroad tomorrow and work in a bar no problem, I met a lot of owners who take people on in the summer seasons from abroad. I just don't think I have the bottle. And what would I do in the off-season? I don't know.

I know people who moved abroad, they struggle to get jobs, if you move over there and get a job in a bar you'll never own a bar, let me put it that way.

One guy I know works a load of cleaning jobs, does barwork and all sorts and barely has a pot to **** in. Guys always poor, the grass is always greener and all that.

Friend of mine who is a few years younger has done something similar.

She worked bloody hard during her 20s, getting to director level in 2 medium-sized companies. Earnt a very good amount of money, but a year ago she packed it all in and sodded off to work on charter boats in the Med. She's currently doing the same in the Caribbean and loving it.

I love my job. It's all about getting the right job and doing something you enjoy, not just what pays well.

There's a big difference between the work you do and your job IMO.
I really enjoy the work I do, but most jobs come with office politics, commutes etc.

I've been in the situation of being happy with the work I get to do, but hating the actual job.

I just can't. Bit of background...

Finished uni, and felt like I need to get a job fast. Felt almost pressured into it but I'm not blaming anyone, I was naive and was all OMG MUST GET REAL JOB mode. Anyway I got a job working in the city centre, pretty decent pay, work with some good lads and it keeps me ticking.

There's no real direct route for progression, and there is so much corporate ******** that it irks me. The 9to5 lifestyle is really not for me and I feel like I'm living for the weekends (well some of them, I work some too). I feel life should be so much more than this grind.

Last year when me and my pals were on holiday we joked about all moving out there and opening a bar or something, imagine the life! I've just been away again and it's made me think again, I can't waste away in this god forsaken office for the rest of my life!

Seeing some of my friends travelling pics/stories on FB makes me regret not doing something like that.

Has anyone given up a decent job and moved abroad to do something? I don't know what to do..

Halp mah GD

Welcome to adult life.

I think of giving up everything every single day and moving to somewhere new or doing something crazy. It will happen soon.

I'm 23 and have mates the same age who have settled down in jobs, married with kids, and continuously tell me I should be doing the same and what on earth am I playing at... Yeah, **** that. I will never, ever settle for anything I am not truly happy with.

lol oh man!! you kids crack me up.:D

I love my job. There are plenty of jobs that aren't office based.

I often try to think of what I could do outside of an office, I like being active and would like to be paid well (who wouldn't) probably my lack of imagination which lets me down. :p

I am in this "Rut" myself. working an offset shift of the 9 - 5 excrement that is office work. I am currently studying to get out but I have like 18 months to go before I go looking for jobs.

Although this new planned job will be another office type job, atleast it will be something I seem to enjoy.

Little off topic

I think I will look for a new job soon tbh, im sick of not getting paid what im supposed to and im getting nothing from my employer as to when it will be fixed. I cant believe I earned more as a dishwasher in morrisons.

I'm a content/web editor for a media firm, get about 22k +bonuses so it's ok. A lot of the work is samey day in, day out.

I am jelly you earn double I do lol

Whats stopping you? Its not just something you have to before/immediately after uni - you can go travelling at any time. Perhaps combine it with volunteering on some project etc... You'll have much more fun banging liberal traveler chicks in hostels etc.. or while volunteering at the endangered turtle sanctuary on some tropical Island than you will in an office. You can still put some guff down on the CV if you've done something with your time too. Its pointless just working in an office because thats what people do etc... if you want to go see the world then its best to do it when you've got no commitments then come back and figure out what you actually want to do with your life and work towards doing that rather than sitting behind a desk in a rubbish job you don't really care for.... you're certainly less likely to progress in an area you have no interest in.

Everyone thinks it would be amazing to live in a holiday location because they associate the location with a good time, lack of day to day worries etc. The reality is usually quite different and it can hit you unexpectedly when not on holiday. Furthermore, it's a bad idea to try to make an impression of how a friend's life is going based on their Facebook account. Some of the people I know seem to live like rockstars, if you only look at their Facebook account but their actual lives are not rosey at all.

As for 9 to 5 jobs, you're right, it's not for everyone but earning your living is. If you wish to explore other possibilities, I suggest you start in your spare time (evening, weekends, holidays) to get a better idea if it's something you like or not. You should also consider that life is Britain is generally better than 95% of the rest of the world. I know someone who moved to Thailand, opened a bar which had decent earnings only to contract an infection which caused the loss of his left leg, something that is very unlikely in Britain.

You've got to follow your own path man.

If you're in web development is there no way you can do a bit of remote work while travelling too?

Alternatively do you still qualify for the work/travel visa to Australia etc.. do a bit of work/bit of travelling.

Potentially, that's something I haven't though about but could be another option.
