Which would you hire?

If neither of you pick up any sort of likeable vibe from him then do you really want to spend 5 days a week with them? Knowing how to do a job technically and actually being able to function in the work environment properly are very different things.

It is a tough call and I think if we go with number 2 then there will be strict expectations in place. It's a 6 month probation so plenty of time to figure out if they're any good or not.

Number 1 does indeed know his stuff but it's a little overkill for the role. Myself and my manager just didn't get the right vibe from him but he is very capable.

Go for it, but if he stabs all the food in your fridge, jumps on your friends broken leg, and tries to cellophane peoples faces when theyre passed out, it's probasbly my old ex army housemate.

Number 2

I hate working with Ex forces as they make you look like a sloppy lazy sod that's always late.
every one of them I have worked with puts in the time and effort and does everything to the Letter

Yes! You were the arrogant one ;)

Knew it! I had feedback which was all good and I would be a perfect fit for the job, but they think I will get bored easily.....

Back on topic: Depends if you want someone who knows it all and gets on with the Job or someone slightly new which you can train how you wish.

Candidate 1. Sounds like he is better qualified and can already do the job. Arrogance or confidence? A fine line I suppose. My guess is you see candidate 1 as more of a threat to your position, hence your poor account of his interview.

Pure speculation of course. :p

Depends.

Candidate 1 is definitively the safer bet. Candidate two my be a lot more interesting, but may also turn out to be a bit unstable.

Which job?

I don't think candidate 1 is a safe bet. I don't think they'll stay and recruitment is an expensive activity.

I can see why he would be the safer bet but the arrogance is a bit off-putting. He is more than able to do the job but gets better exposure where he is at the moment. Why move? It's a step down which makes it obvious to me it's not the next step up in his career as he said in the interview and is for some other reason.

There is a fine line between arrogance and confidence, and someone who is extremely confident of something will appear arrogant even when they don't intend to be. I've interviewed people who were extremely experienced and they almost seemed offended by some of the questions asked or gave very blunt responses, but it is like asking someone if they can tie a shoe lace and they say "yes, of course, i've been doing that for 40 years"

It does seem likely candidate 1 wont stay long but that is often the case with good candidates! Experiences and talented people can more or less walk into any job they want and have no issues chopping and changing.

We have this issue because we only hire the very best candidates but they only stick around for 2 years or so before moving on to bigger and better things, or simply trying a different company out. This has downsides, but the upside is you have a good candidate.

Good employees tend to be mobile, especially when young, bad employees fear going on the job market and will stay put.

I would call up candidate 1 and be very frank and open bout your concerns and see what he has to say. There might be compelling reasons why he wants the job, or he may not really want the job at all and is just applying to test the waters/practice/JSA and would likely turn down the offer.

Candidate 2 I reckon, on a trial basis to ensure his skills and experience check out with the role (3 month review).

Remember ex military guys generally have impeccable work ethic and top notch problem solving skills as well so you're probably on to a winner.

1 Probably won't appreciate the job as much and is just looking to leave their current position, not looking to work for your company so much, they'll be gone as soon as they get a better offer.

Candidate 1 looks to be the safe bet, but long run could move on sooner.

Candidate 2 looks to be a risk but if the enthusiasm is true then could be good in the long run.

This is it for me. Plus, being in the army, he should be used to team work (just guessing whether that'll be important) and he'll be good at the paintball on the bonding exercises.
