So I just got through playing Alien CM on the co-op campaign for the first time and I loved it.

Jumpy moments, Action, Guns, Nice graphics and every now and then I'd shout out on the mic "oooh thats from Aliens" or "oooh the ship from Promethius :D".

By the time We'd gone through it I wanted more and I'll happily go through it again to get all the upgrades for the guns.

So my question is, Why did so many people hate it when it really is an enjoyable game ?

"Jumpy moments, action, guns" are really some of your positive points of the game? Says it all!

Woah easy there, Sounds like your fishing for an argument :p

I'm not going to list all highlights I was just listing them quickly, Dont nit pick.

Maybe just for you I should write an essay explaining how I liked the music, The dialogue and general atmosphere, Make you feel better ? ;)

*Before I cause an inadvertent argument I was making fun of the all the bad press of the game :D*

Many reasons, this video being one.

I preordered the game the night before release and kinda regret it. It surely wasn't worth the £30 cost. But I love the Alien series bad or good so it was a must purchase for me.

The game had many faults like trying to copy Call of Duty with silly upgrades to weapons and "upgrades" to the aliens themselves.

MP was fun like Escape which was like Left 4 Dead but the ending sections felt unfinished, but the biggest problem with Aliens:CM was the lies regarding the graphics.

I still enjoyed the single player game and MP. I should really get back to playing it again.

Because what was show at time and what was promised was nothing like what we finished up with.

From IGN

A class action lawsuit has been filed against SEGA and Gearbox regarding Aliens: Colonial Marines. In a lawsuit obtained by Polygon, plaintiff Damion Perrine claims “that Gearbox and Sega falsely advertised Aliens by showing demos at trade shows like PAX and E3 which didn't end up being accurate representations of the final product.”

Their 'actual gameplay' demonstration advertising campaign bore little resemblance to the retail product.

The demos were advertised as “actual gameplay” at the time, yet portrayed a level of “graphical fidelity, AI behavior and even entire levels not featured in the game.” The suit explains that by having reviews under an embargo that lifted the day of release, consumers did not have time to learn from critics about the difference in quality in the final product compared to early footage.

"Each of the 'actual gameplay' demonstrations purported to show consumers exactly what they would be buying: a cutting edge video game with very specific features and qualities," the claim argues. "Unfortunately for their fans, Defendants never told anyone — consumers, industry critics, reviewers, or reporters — that their 'actual gameplay' demonstration advertising campaign bore little resemblance to the retail product that would eventually be sold to a large community of unwitting purchasers."

The suit also points to this tweet from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, which acknowledges that the difference between the original demo and final game is “understood and fair and we are looking at that. Lots of info to parse, lots of stake holders to respect.”

Earlier this month, SEGA agreed to add a disclaimer to trailers stating that they are not reflective of the final product. The Wii U version of the game was later canceled.
shots lied to you.

A lot of people felt the same, as for me I didn't intent on getting it at launch so wasn't bothered that much.

Well the aliens in that part of the game only react to sound but I do get the point, It looks right at you, I swear one of the those made love to my characters face while I was standing still lol :p

Because when you shoot something in a game you should get a feeling that your shots it it or have some form of an impact.

I can honestly say that Aliens vs Predator 2 did this perfectly. Even the newer version got this bit right.

This game just doesn't "feel" right.

I have to say it's the one game that learnt me not to pre-order a game again and to make it worse I even pre-ordered the season pass :(

Lucky I got the game and season pass cheap and still not played half the stuff from the season pass and probably never will.

I imagine it's a lot more fun if you're playing it with someone. However, when you play the single player campaign, it just sucks.

Bought it in a Steam sale for £3.74 recently. Thought it was a superb old school FPS experience fully patched up graphics looked passable for UT3 engine. Solid voice acting from the series regulars & atmospheric.

IMO the hate was over blown on PC it was no worse than many other high profile releases. The SP story DLC was also excellent & told the back story to what happened to Hicks after Alien 3 ;)

Agreed with AWPC, gameplay and graphics are decent enough now its all patched up. The story was utter rubbish which is where all the hate comes from. But if you can get it for £4 or less it is a decent little shooter.

Bait and switch
False advertising
Misleading
Conniving
Deceit
Dishonesty

Thanks Thesaurus.com :p

But yeah, the footage they advertised the game with was completely fake, and was like advertising a car that could go 500mph and warp through physical objects and then selling everybody a rusty vauxhaul nova. Pretty sure what they did was illegal but hey ho.

For someone (me) who hasn't played an Aliens game since about 1991 on the C64, which would be the best for me to go for?

Is CM worth it when at Steam sale prices? Or should I go for an AvP?

dont worry mate i enjoyed it too, got it cheap during a steam sale, im a huge fan of the aliens franchise and decent set of head phones, that motion tracker blip and i could play a text based game and enjoy it.

Perfect example to me of not letting the negativity around a game put you off. When it was cheap enough i easily got my moneys worth from it, at full price id have been less impressed :)

I preordered this for £39.99 a few days before it was released. Taught me a valuable lesson to not listen to my friends and certainly not to preorder games based on the strength of pre-release footage :)

No, the hate didn't come from the story, the hate came from people paying full price for a game that was nothing like what they had seen advertised as "in game footage".

If you paid £4 for it and got the completely patched version of the game then yes, I can understand why you thought it was ok, but if you pre-ordered it and paid full price for the game and got stuck with what I can only describe as aids on your pc, then you'd be annoyed as much as we were.

Other games have came out looking shoddy upon release but this one more or less resembled an alpha version.
