contemplating a Nad D 1050

That would be again be an upgrade, but not a £400 upgrade (or £250, you can probs resell the Magic Dac for about £150).

I believe the headphone output is better on the Nad(1050) as the website mentions discrete premium headphone so I might be tempted with that as opposed to the 3020? How is the headphone on the 3020 in terms of faithful music reproduction?

I think you’re right but it’s just more powerful capable of driving more demanding headphones but it’s a NAD so I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the amps can’t drive beefy cans anyway :p

They don’t really go into specific detail on what’s different though.

The 3020 goes loud and low and at -20dB it will be damaging to ears or headphones if used for too long.

I've always likened the sound to representing the output from the speaker terminals, pleasing and I guess you could call it faithful.

Finally bit the bullet and purchased the 3020. Glad I did. I was talking to lucid in the other forum about speakers and I was wondering what you were using to pair it up?:

There's a lot to like about the Bostons. As long as the impedance plot isn't too much of a roller-coaster then they'll make the most of the 30W on offer from the little class D amp in the D3020. Whether you like the sound though...

The Cambridge Audio SX50 are a little more squat. They're also an 8 Ohm 90dB speaker too. High efficiency is pretty rare in budget bookshelf speakers. Most are around 85-87dB. You're normally looking at £250+ for 90dB. The other slightly worrying trend is the increasing numbers of 6 Ohm speakers.

In the end I think you need to sit down and have a listen. Arrange a demo and take your amp along.

Ah excellent. I am using a pair of Tannoy Mercury V4 floorstanders. You can also get them in bookshelf format. really really good speakers and come well praised all over. The power of the D 3020 is plenty to drive them to levels uncomfortable for the ears and possibly damaging to the drivers in the speakers themselves and you get no distortion at all.

They do woof about when called for ;)

For films and games they're superb, really a cinematic feel and kick that you feel in your chest. Likewise for music they're sonically sound and appear to cover my music collection consisting of genres from rap to acoustic and electronic with ease.

As mentioned in that quote though, take the amp along to Sevenoaks and/or Richer Sounds branch and demo their speakers in the listening rooms they have. You may like sound of other speakers paired to it. Just so happens I really am a big fan of NAD sound with Tannoy speakers having had the combo over the years through various model lines.
