Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290X with 8 GB & 4 GB in review - is the extra VRAM worth it ?

Only made a difference in two games? 4GB is just about enough at 4k i think for most things, however you won't be able to max AA out in every title. TO do that though you'd likely need 3 or more gpu's to have the grunt required to push those fps. 6-8GB is ideal but 4gb is still enough seems to be the TL DR.

I think to make the use of the vram you would need 2+, But if the price is near 4gb versions i would probably grab one if buying just incase :)

HardOcp done 2 x 295 and only breached the 4gb vram twice with enough fps to spare. I reckon with 3 cards 4gb would be fine and for 2 more than enough. I think they only breached the vram on those games trying to add in 8x aa which nobody really uses.

Is the difference between 4xAA and 8xAA actually noticeable at 4K?

Tested blindly (user not knowing which AA is running) unlikely. Knowing what setting is used it *might* be possible to notice the difference whilst not actually playing the game (standing still / looking at specific locations etc).

TLDR: No :p

What do you reckon, Kaap? Still think that 4K should be absolutely maxed or gtfo and stick to 1600p?

Maxing 4k is just stupid tbh. At any resolution with any setup you should be looking for the best balance ie your desired fps with the settings that deliver it. Only moron's would whack everything to max and play on something that feels choppy. They are out there but for me most PC gamers know what they are doing.

I play at 1200p and like a smooth 60 so will adjust settings to get there. If i had 4k and 4 top end cards i would do the same regardless. Playability is where it's at over a few usually meaning less settings.

This whole maxed or it's rubbish idea is foolish at best.

If you have the grunt there nothing at all with with maxing w/e resolution you use, As long as you still have the FPS your happy with to play

No it isn't. It's foolish in your opinion.

I agree in that I don't see the point of crippling levels of AA but that's not to say my view is the ultimate view. Others think differently and they have as much right to think like that as you do the way you think.

I think Kaap is in the distinct minority with that opinion compared to most. I certainly never agreed with it but as always each to their own.

Yeah. Maybe he'll feel differently when he gets his hands on a 4k screen.

Anyway, that review is a bit pointless without multi card testing... Tbh, I did skim it. So if they actually did do multi card tests, then you ain't seen me, right?

I don't think he will. Knowling Kaapstad, if he can't max it he'll buy more power :D :D :D.

:D I dunno, I think he'll be alright with his quad Titans if the 290X's prove to be VRAM limited at uberduberyoucan'ttellthedifferencebutwhocarescozI'mmaxedoutbaby settings.

I bet Kaap couldn't even tell the difference between High and Ultra quality if it didn't say so in the video options. :p

I think 4K screens should come with the same pixel density as say a 1440p monitor. This would mean much bigger screens but it would also mean wanting to max the settings as the difference would be quite apparent.

Some people would say why do you need a 40" screen but for me it would be ideal as the games I play like Civ5 and RTW2 would look fantastic with most of the map on screen.

Even if I get one of these Samsung 28" 4K screens I won't be using it as my primary monitor as I have a U3011 which suits my needs better.

The problem@4K max settings is spending huge amounts on gpu's and the scaling is ****-shouldn't happen, the support for 3/4 way setups should be much, much better imo.

It probably doesn't matter which vendor you go for as one will scale better than the other-game vendor support dependent.

Sums it up, everyone's experience can be different.

You can tell the distinct difference between 0 AA and max AA in C3 in the long grass levels@4K.:p

Is there any other way? :D

Depends if you're wearing these :p

Sure, how about somewhere in the middle at 2-4xAA?
