Can you still buy a new CRT TV anywhere?

I went for a couple of Viewsonics then Dell Ultrasharp range. That will address some of the comments above regarding definition and colour space. I certainly don't miss the days of having to lug 17" and 19" CRTs around the PC shop where I used to work.

P.S. I did have an old 14" CRT that I used with my BBC Micro, but as of last year, the image has become extremely blurred. Turned out that the tripler has gone, so will have to find another worker for the Beeb or somehow covert the Beeb's signal for a TFT. Any ideas?

Got a 32" sony trinitron sitting in my bedroom. Either need to find someone to take it from me or try hauling it into the car to get it down to the tip before I move out the flat in a couple of months.

Not an easy thing to move around. But on non-HD content the picture is better than a hdtv.

Other than the availability of HD CRTs

Errr what?

One of the major benefits of a quality CRT screen was the very high resolutions you could have, Iiyama Vision Master Pro 514 for example did 2048x1536, miles better than 'HD'.

It's part of the reason most of the PC gamers didn't quite understand the fuss about 'OMG HD' when it first started being a thing.

Plus I still say the picture of a high quality CRT is better than that of a cheap flat screen (non HD of course)

I kept my CRT PC monitor for years into flat screen age. I had a game with night levels and at that time you simply couldn't play them properly of a flat screen.

Even today, I bought my parents a 40" HD flat screen for Xmas. It's great but as soon as you move a foot away from looking straight on and the colours are horrible.

Other than the availability of HD CRTs and the physical size, they beat all but the highest end flat screen for picture quality and usability.

I recently compared a trinitron CRT and a very good 21" LCD playing a HD youtube clip on both. The CRT was way ahead in colour and definition.

Also, when playing videos (MKV, AVI etc) the CRT picture is miles ahead of a very good brand / model of LCD.

I believe it is something to do with the way VLC, media players etc assume that each pixel should be a particular colour - whereas the CRT sort of blends the edges / pixels and gives a different colour representation. The video just seems to be visually superior in a lot of respects (and this is agaonst modern LCDs)

If anyone doesn't believe it - just try it.

I also have wondered about finding a new CRT because I have accessories for old consoles which only work on CRT screens. I have a 32" for it at the moment which I got via freegle but its started making a really high pitched whiney noise and im not sure how long it will last.

Would really like to purchase a new one.

Sounds like your monitor is not correctly calibrated.

Stick it on Freecycle or Gumtree. Someone will have it. Just state that they need to organise collecting.

Thats if you want strangers in your bedroom. :o

OP is sensible. You need to wear anti-radiation head gear when using these new fangled flat screen TVs. Work of the Devil I tell thee.

so apart from size, weight and power consumption the consensus is crt's are better?

this is a computer forum, why are people not still making these? surely we do not care about such frivolities?

Our last CRT was a 32" Philips Matchline and it weighed 50Kg. It was one of two TV's that nearly killed me.

Is that all? I used to move about bigger CRT tellies than that during my stint in electrical retailing. The biggest was a 37" Toshiba with Dolby Digital surround, that weighed more than me & I'm 12 1/2 stone! No wonder I've got a bad back. :(

There's a 12 year old 28" Panasonic CRT downstairs in my house that dad flatly refuses to chuck out, even though the geometry's gone on it & has been like it for some time. When it does they can have mine & I've got the excuse to upgrade. ;)

I've got a 28 inch Panasonic in my spare room.

Carried it up the stairs on my own about 5 years ago, I'm surprised I didn't slip a disc.

It's free to a good home if anyone wants it, beneficiary collects! (that includes carrying it back down the stairs):D
