Single 780 or SLI 780 or Single 6GB 780

I've got a 1440p monitor for quite some time now, i love it.
For everyday tasks, its great. The problem is when it comes to gaming.

On F1 2013, all maxed, a single 780 doesnt sweat at all, as you'd expect from a racing game.
But when playing BF4 online and i like having having game settings on the highest settings, i cant even get a stable 60. It usually plays around 40-55.
I was expecting this from a 1440p.

So now what's the better solution?
Single 780 or SLI 780 or Single 6GB 780

Single 780 - Stick with one card as 40-55FPS is playable anyway. I can seriously still play with these kinds of frames.

SLI 780 - Would this be a better option? Sure it will give me more power to drive the monitor but how about the VRAM?

Single 6GB 780 - EVGA just released their 6GB 780 version. How about this option? There'll be a lot of VRAM, probably only 4GB max will be used but how about the power, will it be enough to properly run my monitor?

Thanks all :)

Id add a second 3gb 780, should be fine vram wise and give a better fps boost. Switching to a 6gb card means your still fps limited to what you get currently.

2nd 780 for definite, a 6GB 780 would be wasted on a 1440p monitor.

SLI 780s are excellent on a 1440p monitor (I have such a set up), you will be able to play nearly every game on max settings at 60+ fps except for the most demanding like Crysis 3 and Black Flag. With max settings on BF4 at 1440p with 2 780s I get around 95-100 fps, so get that extra 780 now and watch the frames roll on by :D

What cpu do you have :)
I have a 4770k @4GHz 0.980v on a Sabertooth Z87.

Thank you all for your reply. It's more or less confirmed that i will be getting a 2nd 780.

One last thing though, I currently have this card the 2nd will will most probably be this.
When putting the 2nd under water with a XSPC Razor block and backplate, do i need to remove the middle plate on this card with the ACX cooler?

Thanks

It's cheaper. That's the main reason.

And correct me if im wrong, but those two will work in SLI together but they will both run on the card with lower speeds which will be the 863Mhz on core, correct?

Something doesn't sound quite right there, I average around 70fps without any unexpected slowdowns on 2560x1440 using full ultra settings in BF4 - are you using the latest drivers?

EDIT: Not tried some of the newer dlc maps mind as I refuse to give ea/dice any more money.

Nop, is it bad that i dislike beta drivers?
Im running 335.23 drivers.

You definitely want to give 337.50 a whirl before deciding to get a 2nd GPU unless you've decided to go SLI anyhow.

The difference on maps like flood zone and siege is huge or me.

That's what I thought, but could be wrong... I know apps like Precision allow you to use different clocks on SLI gpu's though. However not sure if they actually run independantly. Maybe someone like 8Pack could clarify this for you;)

Remember multi gpus also have their downsides. Like frame skipping/stuttering. I have heard people return their second gpus because they hated the stuttering.

Haven't tried it in a very long time (think it was 8000 series GPUs) but it didn't used to like it being forced to different clock speeds - anything more than 2-3% difference (can't remember exactly) would result in very noticeable microstutter.

EDIT: Also possibly not suprising I'm seeing such a difference in performance if hes getting around that stock boost clock of 902MHz as I'm running around 30% higher boost clocks on my 780.

Was just thinking about this while playing battlefield if i can maintain 60fps @1440 @ultra then surely he should be able to... but then maybe the extra boost on my 780 is helping me out dunno :)

An extra 780 does sound nice though

BF4 isn't the most graphically intensive game so not sure why he is having issues, but even though BF4 and frostbite 3 engine are well optimised, I would think a stock 780 would defo drop below 60fps on online maps here and there. Are you guys measuring your fps on fraps or just assuming it stays above 60? I have noticed some people cant tell the difference or it just doesn't bother them enough to realise, but I bet if you turned fraps on you might be surprised! For instance my 780ti SLI's on crysis 3 drop below 60fps at 1080p on stock fan speeds. I have to create custom fan speeds to keep them at a constant 60fps.

I've done laps of for instance siege of shanghai and zavod with fraps in benchmark mode on 64 player CQ servers.

EDIT: Not saying it will be above 60fps 100% of the time but its the exception to drop below rather than the rule by a long way.

A single 780 will indeed drop below 60 fps, map dependent of course. Ive uploaded a few frame time analysis shots showing this in the bf4 bench thread. My average is usually in the 90's at 1920x1200, x4msaa, ultra settings.
