*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S5 Thread ***

Fastest selling Galaxy phone apparently. 10 Millions sales in 25 days.

I find that stat hard to believe. I guess the market has expanded and a lot of people are coming out of two year contracts.

Whilst the s5 may be technically a slight improvement over the s4 I personally don't regard it as a better phone. The design is a real backward step.

I'd say a lot of it is down to marketing. Apple and Samsung are all what a lot of people recognise.

I'd also say its down to a lot of pent up demand for smartphones and people ending up with the S5 by default with it having the "this is the latest" factor.

You'd be surprised how little the actual device matters in all this.. remember Apple secured a massive market share largely off the back of phones without 3G or even the ability to copy and paste.. there were huge issues around early iPhones.

Plus there's the fact Samsung are probably reporting sales IN not OUT so a fair chunk of that number will be in the various supply chains of their partners.

But look at last year, I think everyone was pretty much agreed the One was the better phone but it got spanked. This year we have the One M8 and Z2.. they'll still get spanked.

Just like the 4S and 5S being some of the biggest selling handsets ever with practically no improvement over the predecessor.

Its far from being about the best product, just the best marketing, commercial and incentivising muscle and Samsung and Apple have that pretty much sewn up here.

Heh, add no video recording and no MMS which was such a glaring omission at the time that apple (eventually) added it back in on iOS 3. Wasnt available for the original iPhone though, we had to jailbreak for MMS. Had a few arguments on here about that :p

Looks a lot like the normal S5 to me.

Surely people will be raging about this, their shiny new S5 out of date after a few months?!

Yep there's a lot of S5 owners who are already quite annoyed.

Quite glad I managed to hold off from buying one now! :p

I know I would be!

Its getting pathetic with all these 10,000 different versions reminds me of HTC before they slowed down releasing so much.

Atleast Apple's design had some class to begin with :D

TBH I think the idea of changing design ever 2 years is great. HTC just went all out on the M8, and the M7 was beautiful, and some other parts of the device didn't get the love they needed e.g. camera. If they kept the same design this year and focused on things like the Camera I think the M8 would have been a better device.

However Samsung has basically had the same design for the S3/S4/S5. There really isn't much change at all. I will wait to see what Apple does with the iPhone 6 before judging them, the changes for them so far hasn't been huge, I feel the 4/4s where better built, and they removed some really premium parts like the stainless steel band for tint foil :P. But the 5/5s looks much better then any Samsung phone.

It's not a clever way to treat customers and lots aren't going to be very pleased. The production of 'x' variants of a phone has just become silly.

Samsung have become complacent and are basically the new apple. They believe they can now get away with re-releasing pretty much the same phone every year. They will get away with it for a while but it will backfire eventually.

Although I do like my s4, I don't like the way Samsung are going and wouldn't currently buy another of their phones.

I think Samsung gets the game, only nerds care about design, they understand that it is all about the brand, they hired out a airport, no one else does that. I think as long as they keep spamming the media with Galaxy they won't really be in any trouble, and tbh outside of the design the S5 is good enough again, without any real pitfalls.

Well I am officially a nerd then as I very much care about the design of any expensive piece of tech I buy ;)
