Hi,

I've got a bar coming this week and want to know if it's possible to connect a real beer tap to the 5kg mini beer kegs you can buy from Supermarkets?

If so and if anyone could give me a list of things I need and how to do it it'd be much appreciated!

Not possible sfaik

and don't tell me it's a Keg of Lager or you shall lose all manpoints!

Why is it sooooooo cool to bash lager in any drinking thread. It way way way outsells bitters and ales, so I assume it's a niche elitism regardless of the fact most ales are thick yeasty and disgusting, with exceptions obviously.

If it's a keg (rather than a cask which is not stored under pressure) then you won't be able to a hand-pull/beer engine. Given the correct fittings you should be able to fit a tap/font like those used in pubs to dispense (for example) lager.

This will cost significantly more than the 5 litre mini-keg though! And bear in mind 5 litres is less than 9 pints which will mean you are forever changing the mini-keg.

I really don't think it's worth the bother.

Might just got for the Philips 3620 beer dispenser tbh, it has very good reviews and looks smart. Basically I just want to be able to pull my own beers! I don't need to have a real bar tap but wondered if it would be a feasible thing to do, appears it would but requires more effort than it's worth.

Regarding type of beverage yes it'd be for lagers! I'm a fan of Ale etc. but you cannot beat a refreshing ice cold crisp lager on a hot day! :)

Because it tastes like **** & water whereas Ale has flavor and not all of them are thick and bitter some are light and refreshing but then you wouldn't know would you Lagerboy!

In which case the most sensible option (other than 'don't bother') is to buy your lager in lager quantities - Perhaps a firkin (72 pt) and grab a beer font. You'll find lots of information on how to do this as connecting Cornelius kegs (cornies) to beer fonts is a very common way of dispensing homebrew beer.

A local pub might be willing to help with purchasing the firkin.

it definitely its elitism. i know because i do it my self sometimes but at the same time i will happily enjoy a larger. its just people being cheese ends really

Lager is a style of beer. Get yourself some 'proper' lager and you might change your mind. Suggesting all lager is rubbish is like saying all ale is rubbish because you don't like (let's say) pale ale but you do like a ruby red ale. The typical lagers you buy in a pub (Carling/Carlsberg/Fosters) are only the tip of the lager-iceberg.

Just regenerating this thread as I'm stumbled upon something else which could be just the job!

Would I be able to connect a normal beer tap to the top of this keg? If so I have a couple of other questions but first I just want to see if it's possible to do this.

not really, thats designed for kegging homebrew, its dispensed via mavity, the CO2 injector is just there in case you create a vacuum which slows beer dispensing, you will want something like this:

Should run you about £100
They tend to have standard fittings on the 5l kegs iirc but I cant be certain!

yeah seen them ^

so the only way the beer is dispensed is with the tap at the bottom of the keg? Would it not be possible to connect a coupler to the top of the keg to run a tube to a beer tap ?

I can't say I've ever seen the point of trying this, myself... There's certainly saving to be made buying larger kegs for a home bar (or homebrewing your own and putting it into a 5l Keg)... but for the price of normal lager kegs, you may as well buy a fridge and stock it with cans.
