Hey guys, haven't posted here in quiet a while.

Just looking for a second opinion on a GPU upgrade.

Currently have my beloved XFX 5770 (bought from OC in 2010(?)). The little fella has been amazing to me and has played his heart out, but I think it's time he retired to a nice relaxing HTPC build.

I had a look at the current GPU benchmarks, and the GTX 770, seems to be the highest performing card for just over £200 (according to videocardbenchmark.net).

Just wanted to see if anyone else agrees/disagrees with this.

Thanks in advance for any help/feedback!

CPU - Phenom II X6 1055T 2.81
PSU - Corsair TX 650W PSU
Res - 1920*

This has actually reminded me, that I may need to upgrade PSU. I know PSU wattage calculators are a tad (shall we say, unreliable?), but according to the asus one, I would need a 700-750W to power a 770.

I would say that you don't need to buy another psu.

The GTX770 and the 280X compete at the same level, but unless you're running something like Skyrim with plenty of mods, your won't see the benefit of the 280X's larger memory interface (384 bit) / larger amount of video memory (3gb) over the GTX770's capacity (256 bit / 2gb). However, the 280X is invariably cheaper, so unless you have a requirement for a specific Nvidia feature (like cuda), or simply want to try an Nvidia card, then the 280X will be better value.

That said, I've just noticed that there are some reasonably well priced GTX770's on sale right now.

I would highly recommend overclocking your cpu to get the most out of your new graphics card, otherwise there will be a bottleneck.

The advantage with you going AMD is that you can use Mantle, which will help to lessen the possibility of a cpu / gpu bottleneck (very much in its infancy with only a couple of games supported so far, but that will grow).

The card you selected is a good choice, and will be a massive upgrade from your 5770. The 280 (non-X) equates to a GTX670.

There is also this 280 which is a little cheaper, though weighing it up I think the extra tenner for the MSI card will be worth it overall :

Awesome, thanks again dude.

One last quick question then, do you think something like the Sapphire Radeon R9 280X (£239.99) is worth the extra 40 quid then? Bearing in mind, I only really play games such as CS:GO, Boarderlands 2 and the like, never ball busting stuff. I mean, I can see the obvious memory width, boost clock, but in your opinion is it worth it? I suppose the extra dvi port would be handy though.

I guess it's really a question I have to ask myself :)

Thanks for all the help dude.

Much appreciated.

I've used an old comparison, but in theory driver enhancements should be relative (the 280 = the 7950).

Is that worth 40 notes to you? Only you can really decide that. :)

Another interesting point...is that with you upping the budget, I'd normally be suggesting the GTX770 on special offer. However, due to having the option of running Mantle &, I assume, you keeping the card for some time to come, you should see some Mantle friendly titles emerge making the the AMD card the slightly better choice. If you didn't have an AMD cpu, I'd probably be recommending the cheaper GTX770.

Btw, I like your signature.

Wait for a 280X sale, they go between £200 and £220, anything will work - His, Asus, GB, Powercolor, XFX. I recommend you not to buy a VTX3D/Club3D due to the coil whine (I myself have one and excluding this is a stellar performer for the money) and not to buy a Sapphire Dual X as I have read about numerous (10+) cards that get their fans absolutely wrecked in 6-8 months use. The fans Sapphire use for their Dual X series is of very low quality and people absolutely regret their decision as even though manufacturer usually replaces the card it takes time to RMA it. I have read stuff like that about XFX as well but with lower number of failures so it might be individual examples but as their RMA is so bad I have put them as last resort.

No need to upgrade PSU at all. This setup should run on 500W+ PSU. I have mine with Corsair HX620 and Q5500 (OC to 4GHz but still a huge bottleneck on the card).

Thanks for the advice dude. I did read a couple of forum posts while further investigating and this was said before.

Hello, rather then opening new post I have fairly similar question, I am trying to decide which of cards should I get(gtx 770 or 280x)
cpu I5 2500, currently gtx570 ti 16 gb ram, I think the psu is 650W, i do play BF4 quite a lot on 1080, also my monitor is 144Hz, as longest i can play as smooth as possible (I am happy to scarifies ultra details for absolute smoothness and over 100fps (competitive player) ) I know that ea favors amd with the mantle but what about other games ? Wolfenstein, Far Cry 4 and so on....Also the shadow play sounds quite interesting....
thanks

Any particular brand ? Id like to avoid very noisy cards, and all them coil whines and stuff,I hope i wont make a mistake going for AMD, but after seeing all the reviews I think it might be better value.
