Well just installed Win 8.1 on my spare SSD no problems at all well impressed easy to install plus finding my way round quite easy, but must say did not try the dredfull originial Win 8.

So some time this week going to install my spare Samsung 256GB 830 SSD for my OS + Apps and keep my 500GB 840 EVO for game's only in my recent X79 build with a 500GB HDD for back up.

Will update this thread later next week to say how l got on and my thoughts about 8.1 for general use and gaming..:)

Hello OLDPHART,

I'm a fan of Win8.1 too, I use it with Startisback and don't have any problems at all, prefer it to Win7.

People on here will no doubt say that I shouldn't be using it with a Start Menu replacement and that I am stuck in my ways and afraid of change, but I can live with that if they can :p

Gaming-wise, I haven't noticed any problems at all with 8.1 but I don't really play the most modern games out, a bit of Age of Empires and Company of Heroes satisfies my gaming needs.

Is there any eta on the start menu returning?

8.1 isn't much different to 8 apart from a few minor tweaks.

I'm using Windows 8.1 pro with Classic Shell installed. I have to admit I quite like it (get the speed of Windows 8 with the Windows 7 UI)

Fast boot with my laptop is incredibly fast when starting

On my desktop I've had a few issues with the power saving being a bit aggressive (e.g. powers down the HDD where all my music & games are stored, causes explorer to hang while the drive spins back up)

If thats the case what was so bad about it, unless the few minor tweaks have worked magic.

I'v just turned 59 this month and basiclly with just a couple of hours playing around l can get navigate round it, when months ago it was all doom and gloom from what l read from user's.

Also basiclly went online Googled win 8.1 tweaks and applied a couple of them and its even easier to use, reset it to local account, changed the start menu slightly and altered the corner gizmo thingy turned off top left and right corner.

So now when l power up the PC goes straight to desktop with out the need to sign in.

Also you can pin the apps to the taskbar or create a short cut if need be.

A sustained overreaction fuelled by bloggers and hacks in the tech press is about the head and tail of it.

That's not to say 8 was fully baked when it was released - not even close - and it's still a bit rough and ready even now in places. But there were barely any problems that couldn't be solved with a few minutes fiddling from day 1.

That's not an excuse for the poor execution or complete lack of introductory support from Microsoft and lot of the complaints were valid, but most just lacked any sense of context. It was blown way out of proportion and things ended up getting really silly.

I like Windows 8 / 8.1 as well from a dual-OS sense. I run the desktop OS for Office and Steam games, then the tablet "Metro" OS for tablet games. Touchscreen is a GODSEND for tablet games like Bejeweled! It works well for stuff like Poker Night 2 off Steam too :-)

I like windows 8 also, don’t think there was much difference between 8 and 8.1. I never really used the start menu so did not miss it. Not bothered if it gets added or not really.

I used both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 and apart from the start button which does the same thing as going to the corner of the screen used to, I have no idea what the differences are?

Well apart from performance stuff.

Adding the power button to the start screen.
Tile size changes as well?..I think, not sure.
Log into Desktop.
Moving the Apps under the Pin start screen for easier access.
The Store was updated, looks and works a lot better.
The search adding in all kinds of web based results as well as local etc.

Metro app title bar
After closing all Apps the user ends in the Desktop
Pictures, Music and Video files open with Desktop applications

Must admit I hated win 8 when it first came out - hated the metro interface. 8.1 is better, and I am slowly warming to it. Windows 8.1 definitely is faster on the same hardware, and has lots of useful things under the hood so to speak.

I am currently running 7 and 8.1 on my system at the moment, and still using 7 more than 8 on a daily basis, but I can see me moving to 8 altogether soon. Overall I think in many ways 8 is a good step up from windows 7, and who knows what windows 9 will bring next year????

I've had a Lenovo Yoga through work to try out which has W8 on it.

I've had it for 2 days and I hate the OS. I really do.. I've asked for Windows 7 to be put on it but they've said no :D

I want so much to hate it... I truly do.
But the simple fact is, that I dont.

I used Start8 on my main PC and Classic Shell on my Laptop, and Windows Blinds lets me use a nice theme that gives it a Win7 look again, and I avoid the Metro junk like the plaque, but again... I have the entire Object Desaktop suite and so I have chucked modern mix onto it too, to let the Windows 8 apps run in a window and thankfully they dont come up anyway, but all in all... Its reallly not that bad.
