Hi guys,

A lad i work with has a 58 plate Audi A3 2.0 TFSI, i've been telling him to get it remapped as well why not :p

We've had a quick look but most remaps i've seen just seem to be chips people load on and not a what i would call a 'proper' live map on a dyno & road like i've had done on my Subaru.

I know these are essentially the same engine as the mk5 Golf GTi so there should be lots of experience out there so what are the best options for remapping these? Are there any essential mods you need to do to address any weak points as well?

If it's just a remap with no other supporting mods, then there is no reason not to have a generic flash map. It will still to wonders and transform the car, without the extra expense of travelling and RR time. Something like the Superchips Bluefin would be a great start when looking.

Otherwise, Rtech do great work with live mapping. But there would be little point without a host of supporting mods, such as sports cat / turbo back exhaust, air filters, silicone hosing, intercoolers, k04 turbo upgrade etc... All of which will cost real money, but should see over 300 BHP.

Personally, on a car like that, I would just stick on a generic map and be happy in the knowledge it didn't cost very much, will give the best bang for buck and will be pretty safe assuming you go to a well known tuner.

MRC Tuning do all sorts of VAG tuning, and do live mapping on their own rolling road :).

APR and Awesome GTI are the other two big names, but I don't know if they're custom mapping each car or flashing on a map that they've developed over the years.

Revo seem to do quite a bit with these engines too

Revo is just a generic remap and they aren't the cheapest generic.

If you want generic then Shark, Revo, APR (in order of cost).

If you want a good live map then doesn't cost the earth then Nick at R-Tech is ideal. He will not map the car if the health check (i believe it is free) shows any issues wrong with the engine etc.

I use Doug and Mihnea at MRC for my Audi tuning and highly rate them. You should see around 250-260hp from the stock 200hp originally with the re-map.

Remember a good remap is not all about who claims the highest HP figure.
Remember HP is top speed. A good torque curve gives good acceleration.

In my experience few cars make the HP claims of the remap when tested on a rolling road. Also some remaps run dangerously lean, so definitely go with a well known brand.
For goodness sake avoid a tuning box. All they do is fool the engine into over fuelling. Pay the extra and get a proper remap.

My Focus (whilst a TDCI) has a Bluefin. I got it cheap off Ebay (make sure they are 'reset' if you buy a used one) at circa £185 and it really transformed the car. The device has both remap and standard map on there and can read fault codes too.

Never forget to tell your insurance. "But they will never find out!" is often said, which is true in 99% of crashes. However if you cause a £2,000,000 pile up on the motorway they will sure as hell check.

Whilst the car should always be treated well it is even more important to do so when it is remapped. Ensure the engine is warm before giving it some and take it easy for the last few hundred metres to let the turbo cool.

Thanks for all the replies.

The car is a Manual so no worries about stressing out the DSG 'box.

Only issue is we're up on Anglesey so seem to be miles away from anywhere! Does look like a generic map would probably be fine as he's not planning on any mods at all.

Got a standard Shark remap on my GTI. Also worth investing in an anti lift kit (superpro or whiteline for example) - makes the front end far more stable under acceleration.

your talking about a stage 1 remap, a 'generic' flash is fine at this stage aslong you use a reputable tuner such as revo, shark, blufin ect

remember always to tell your insurance, as said im sure they will check

also remember more power = more heat, if you drive heavy footed expect to be replacing parts

some stage 1 remaps still give 30% more power, with your stock brakes...

my car was 260 bhp now its 320 bhp, I can take it to 380 bhp with a de-cat and intercooler, but to be honest its so hot under the bonnet I wouldn't dare

Ive driven a remapped mk5 golf gti was so much fun so deffo worth it on the audi too

If you're in Anglesey then Martin @ Unit20 in Neston (near Chester) is the man to speak too. He has Revo & Shark mapping facilities and I've used him for my gearbox swap and nothing but good words to say about him and the company.

The DSG remaps better as you don't have a clutch to worry about. The manual will eat it's clutch relatively quickly post remap.

This is certainly true on the S3 clutches :p not sure on the A3 tfsi. Not a cheap job either!
