Hello all

This is a development of an earlier thread.
I'm looking to upgrade my GPU and I'm split between these two...

HIS Radeon R9 280X iPower IceQ X2 TURBO 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
currently going for £239.99

or

MSI Geforce GTX 770 Gaming Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
currently going for £229.99

At these prices which is the best buy??

My current GPU is a HD5850. My system (built in late 2009) is...

An i7 920 D0 stepping Nehalem CPU (currently at stock)
A Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
A Corsair TX 750W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply
24GB Ram
Running Windows 7 64bit

Thanks.

Similar performance. So why go for the 770 when it has, less vram, a small bit bus (so lower memory bandwidth) no free games. The 280X allows full voltage control, so can be clocked high is also slightly faster than a 770 over most (but not all) games. No brainer for me, but some might say im biased. :D

Hmm. Is it really as cut and dry as that?
Having done a little research, it seems that the MSI does perform fractionally better than a 280x in many situations despite the smaller amount of vram.
I wish I could find a comparison between these two specific models though.
As for deal-sweeteners, I know the AMDs come with 3 free games, but the MSI does come with Watch Dogs - a title I'm interested in playing.
Gah! I just don't know!
Anyone else want to weigh in with an opinion!?
Thanks gang.

I will weigh in an opinion.

If the 770 was a bit cheaper at say £199 i would get that regardless of anything unless you like the look of the 3 free games that amd do. The 280x and 770 perform on par with each other.

Would you rather have a 280x with 3 free games and all the things LtMatt says, and then buy watchdogs somewhere online 'cough' i've seen it for £25.99, Or would you rather just buy the 770 with watchdogs for £10 cheaper.

There really is not too much between the cards performance wise so whats specific to you is really all that matters, there is no wrong choice.

What resolution are you playing at, 1920x1080 ?

Did not want to edit my post again so,

I would not buy an overclocked version of the HIS card when the none overclocked one is only 50mhz slower and can overclock probably to similar speeds, and is cheaper than the 770 at £228.

That is a decent enough res for both cards, if you feel an extra 1gb of vram may make the card last longer than one with 2gb then get the 280x.

If you want a 770 which performs slimilar to the 280x for cheaper with a game you want then go for the 770.

Vram currently does not hamper the card in any way 2gb or 3gb on the mid level cards although an extra 1gb is still an extra 1gb of vram.

The coming game that has prompted my desire to upgrade is Elite Dangerous.
The folk on the Elite forum are generally finding better performance in the Alpha with NVidia GPUs, but I just don't know!

I had a look for some benchmark scores for that game but could not find any.

Seriously, never heard of it?
Elite was a bit of a milestone in gaming history back in 1984 - effectively launching the open world space trader game - and this latest in the series is about to enter it's Beta phase.
That it's in development is probably why there are no benchmarks to be found.

But, back to the card issue, when I look up reviews of the MSI, it seems to be very well received - but then again a lot of those reviews are nearly a year old.

The problem is you are getting the same performance on a gtx770 and 280x but the 280x has 1 gb extra ram and more memory bandwidth from the larger bus. Look over at the Wolfenstein thread where 2gb of ram is not enough to run ultra details yet the 280x 3gb card can. Even if this game is a one of which i doubt it is why risk it.
