Hi everyone, I'm having trouble with my current 5.1 surround sound system, it's only playing sound through the 2 front speakers. Until last week the subwoofer was working too. The 2 rear speakers and the front sound bar play sound when I swap the cables round in the back of the dvd player so I know its a problem with the unit and not the speakers.

As the speaker wires are chased through the walls and I dont use the dvd player for anything but surround sound I was wondering if the was some kind of device I could buy that could output 5.1 to the current speakers.

The system is a Samsung, unsure of the model (ill check later) I think its 1000W.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

EDIT: forgot to mention I use an optical cable for input, my pc recognises this as "SPDIF"

Check the manual and read up about the button that changes surround modes. It sounds like it got pressed by accident and now the system is playing in stereo mode rather than surround.

If you haven't got tyour manual or just can't be arsed finding it then go download the PDF version from the Samsung web site.

Cheers lucid, unfortunately I dont have any manuals, I messed around with the settings and its in 5.1 mode but it still only outputs to the front 2 speakers. I've been doing a bit of digging and what I think might work is an amplifier of some kind but appart from the wattage I have no idea what the rest of the specs mean or how much I would need to pay.

Does anyone have experience of using an amplifier insead of the dvd player for a surround sound setup?

I had a couple of Home Cinema systems before, the All In One's like you've got at the moment. Once you look at other Satellite speakers you realise how weak/lightweight they are.

If your on a budget and would like to replace rather than fix, I'd pickup one of these below at around £200-300.

I don't think you'll do any good powering those Speakers that come with the All In One's with an Amplifer, you'll mostly blow them pretty easily.
