Howdy folks,

Just wondering if it's possible/easy to paint the heatsinks on a motherboard (obviously after they've been removed)? I was thinking of using something like a specialist radiator paint so that heat transfer wouldn't be affected too much.

Anyone here done it? A quick Google gives mixed results in terms of people saying it's possible or not.

Thanks in advance!

I see the OP must have been too young to do the old tin cans experiment in science class.

3 tin cans with labels removed , 1 left silver, 1 painted white and 1 painted black and all filled with boiling water. ;)

BTW radiator paint isnt for heat transfer but to increase paint longevity on a surface which undergoes temp change fairly quickly, if you used standard paint on a radiator it is usually fine but sometimes it can bubble or crack. You would be fine with paint from a model shop tbh, as you wont be painting it on super thick anyway.

If heat transfer was really a priority on these heatsinks, then they would be made out of copper rather than aluminium, not that it even affects heat transfer all that much.

The only motherboards which struggle with overheating are the cheaper am3+ mobo's when paired with a hefty fx chip.

Household radiators are white for aesthetics, painted black the same radiator will heat the room more.

Copper may conduct heat better but Aluminium dissipates heat better.

You mentioned/asked if paint would effect heat transfer and you got some feedback.

You will also be on holiday for that 4 letter word above (one of the worst insults you can call anyone IMO).
