Why 'Watch Dogs' Is Bad News For AMD Users -- And Potentially The Entire PC Gaming Ecosystem

tbh I think AMD has nothing to worry about - They've already bagged it having both the two next-gen consoles in their back pocket.

This is only one game which in all honesty I have no interest in what so ever playing, and even if I did it would be on my PS4 with a joypad.

FPS = PC, Rest = PS4.

The loser here is going to be ubisoft, as the average console gamer will refuse to buy their products if it looks pants on their new next-gen console.

Thats medium settings.

What surprises me is how well a 770 does compared to a 780Ti!
I mean look at the 770 compared to a 760. If memory serves that basically a 680 and 670 respectively? I didn't think the gap was that big?
Looks to me like the 770 seems to be overperforming compared to other cards.
Based on that graph a 280X (basically a 7970) is 9fps behind a 780Ti.
And we're saying that this game is heavily biased in favour of Nvidia? when 9 fps separate AMD's re-baged top-end card and Nvidia's current gen top-end card?

EDIT: just seen that was medium settings. Still the 290X is only 14-15fps below a 780Ti. In context that doesn't seems as bad as a 770 trading blows with the 290X.

Actually as I mentioned before it just seem to cripple the 290 performance the most, the rest of the cards seem to perform roughly at where they should be...which is why I said may be GameWorks is capping the utilization of bus size to 384-bit, with the 290x being barely faster than the 280x or 770 with the lower due to lower memory bandwidth...

I don't think memory bandwidth will affect performance that much at 1080/1440 to be fair.(384 vs 512)
Normally yes, but for this particular game and how intensive it is on the memory...it's hard to say. It's probably to do with the fact that the 290x only has 1250MHz (5000MHz) on the memory clock as well.

Watch Dogs: Analyzing the impact of Nvidia’s GameWorks integration and AMD performance

I’ve expressed my views and concerns on GameWorks in two past articles; I’m not going to rehash them here. What I will note is that Nvidia’s decision to create a set of closed libraries that developers can’t share with AMD, combined with developer decisions on whether or not to collaborate with AMD on substantive driver improvements in other areas, have created a scenario in which every GW title must be scrutinized to determine if it treats AMD GPUs fairly (to the extent that this is possible).

Much has been written on whether or not Mantle should be viewed as equivalent to GameWorks, and indeed, it’s true that AMD’s DX11 performance relative to Nvidia’s has been somewhat lower in Battlefield 4 and Thief. That’s something I’ve called on AMD to fix — I think the fact that HD 6000 series users or GCN (Graphics Core Next) users who don’t want to use Mantle don’t get fully optimized DX11 performance is problematic.

The difference here is one of size and scope. Now that GameWorks is embedded in the Unreal 4 engine, it could impact AMD’s competitive performance for years to come. Mantle, in contrast, is shipping in a relative handful of titles. Furthermore, there’s zero evidence that developers who have embraced Mantle are doing so in a manner that would impact Nvidia’s DX11 performance in any way. Some have argued that because AMD can still perform indirect optimization on GW titles, the impact of the program is meaningless — but this ignores the fact that the vast majority of performance profiling in any given game occurs within weeks of its release. If AMD (or Nvidia) can’t push out an optimized driver in a very small window, the majority of game reviews will show a decided advantage for the home player. Only those games incorporated widely into GPU reviews will show the benefit of iterative driver updates.

AMD just need to ensure that Mantle support is included in every Gameworks title, I doubt they will though as they will be unwilling to pay developers to add it (certainly in the long run) and the AMD fanboys will simply blame NVidia letting them off the hook as always.

Right, so he now admits that he was wrong saying that AMD couldn't optimise, but is now saying that it is still bad because lazy reviewers only benchmark on launch day and dont bother re-doing any of their work when drivers and fixes are released

That gate swing both ways

He's also saying that mantle is unimportant because its only in 2 titles, where as gameworks is in an ever increasing number of titles, so he's actually making nvidias marketing case for them, admitting that nvidias gaming efforts are more important

So once all those 40 games studios roll out mantle games that we hear about, will that not be the same as gameworks? Buy amd or get less performance?

Why do people keep bringing up Mantle?

Andy you have a tri-SLI rig you won't miss out by using DX over Mantle. Meanwhile Gameworks gimps the hardware of people paying almost as much as you did for their PCs.

Not the same thing at all in my mind.

You'll have to say this many more times over the coming days. ;)
