Craft Beers

Punk IPA is great, in fact thats the beer that moved me onto IPA, since then ive really settled on Sierra Nevada IPA, and the Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA

If you don't know what to get then stick to supermarkets. Punk IPA is pretty good, but as some have said not great.

Better alternatives in Supermarkets are:

Sierra Nevada Pale - Everywhere
Sierra Nevada Torpedo - Tesco
Thornbridge Jaipur - Waitrose
Oakham Citra - Waitrose
Tesco's Finest American Double IPA - Pretty much Brew Dog Hardcore IPA, Amazing!

If you want to go to somewhere like Beermoth then my favourites Brewers available there are:

Green Flash
Dark Horse
Bear Republic
Mikkeller
Founders
Oskar Blues
Ska Brewing
Beavertown

The Kernel can be great but I have had a few not so good ones.

sierra nevada torpedo is delicious! as is the normal ipa.

my local breweires, mighty oak and farmers ales in essex do some lovely brews.

If you live near Didsbury then a new shop just opened last week on Burton road that sells lots of nice craft ales. Its a bit like beermoth but not in the Northen Quarter, Also Carringtons (think it's a small chain) have a some nice ones including normally some local brews.

If you are in the centre of town you can always go to the Brew dog bar, and have some tasters ;)

For reference it's called The Epicurean - it's really awesome :)

edit: West Didsbury btw, over the road from the Coop.

had my first session on Punk IPA on Sunday as a local pub has started selling it on draught.

My hangover the next day was so severe I would question how pure their brewing techniques are.

They do sell a nice craft lager called Noble though.

Lol :p

I think the issue with Punk and many of the other Brewdog beers is that they're far too easy to drink with quite a high ABV.

That's why my favorite Brew dog beer is actually Dead pony club. Hoppy, crisp and only 3.8%. ;)

I like Punk, but it's a bit much after 3 or 4.

Your best bet is to find out the type of beer he drinks. I would recommend a few pints of an evening, purely for research purposes you understand....

I prefer my ales dark with flavour rather than them pale liquids some people drink (I guess its the difference between a proper cuppa and a cup of hot water being shown a tea bag) ;)

It's not really as simple as that though - strong malt flavours are quite possible with light-coloured ales. You're more likely to get darker flavours with dark ales of course, and caramel flavours are usually medium-dark to dark.

Aside from that you've got hop flavours and aromas. Personally I prefer a very clean malt bill with a ridiculously strong hop hit. My drink may look like a lager from a distance but it's absolutely nothing like one ;)

Very few beers I don't like to be honest, it usually goes in cycles as to what I drink and will even sometimes have a thirst for a cool lager. Am really in to my old ales atm despite them traditionally being a more wintery drink. Pale ales will always be popular as they are a fantastic base for complex hop flavours to be brought out... Must say the American craft beer scene is really blowing UK beers away these days, especially with higher abv. drinks such as double IPAs,or Russian/Imperial stouts, porters etc.

For me the American beers are all about the big hops flavour, rather than the high abv. Anything stronger than about 7 abv and I start to not enjoy it as much.

My favourite beers at the moment are similar to how FrenchTart described:
