hi iv just bought a 290x and i already have a 7970 and i was just wondering how i would crossfire these two cards ,
ive read the new cards don't need a bridge but i assume the 7970 still does
so how do i do it bit confused

thanks DW

Nope they have to be the same chip. You can crossfire 2 Tahiti chips 7950, 7970, 7990 (which is a dual chip pcb) 280 or 280X. You can crossfire 2 Hawaii chips, 290 or 290X with each other. But you cannot crossfire 2 card from a different family of chips.

The XDMA method of crossfire (which is what the 290/290X uses rather than a bridge) isn't motherboard specific. So long as your motherboard supports Crossfire - which yours does - a pair of 290/290X's will work perfectly.

Don't apologise for questions if you've searched and can't find the answer. We aren't all experts in every field and that's why these forums exist. Well, to learn and watch the AMD and Nvidia fanboys fight in out! :D

I have fallen foul of the "buy first and find out later" bug before mate, pretty sure we all have at some point! :D

It's often cheaper to chuck a question at the forum about your plans and you'll soon get people telling you if there's any issues or problems that you haven't thought of - like finding out Crossfire requires the same family of GPU chip. You may well get the mickey taken slightly but it's always in jest and the people on this forum really are some of the best informed and most intelligent I've run into.

One thing to watch out for is if you are thinking of going for 290X Crossfire, you will need a very meaty power supply to run them. I ran my rig on a decent 750W PSU (XFX Bronze rated) and still shut my PC down the one time I overclocked and overvolted my GPUs - it did pull 940W from the wall, so it was fair enough that it shut down! :) What's your specs at the moment mate?

well i just ordered a 290x an a AOC 4k monitor then decided to do some research to find ill probably need another 290x lol and a 1000w psu ( thinkin about the super flower )
didnt really want to upgrade to much was saving for a new pc

i have a 850 corsair i7 920 @ 3.8 6 g ddr 3 6 ish ssd,s 1 tb hdd 3X24" asus monitors running on a 7970 matrix

You could have gotten yourself a nice rig with going for 4K. Its not worth it at the moment and honestly, a nice 1440p monitor would have been a better alternative.

A good quality 850W PSU, like yours, should run two 290Xs fine at stock and maybe even a small OC. However, that's with a Sandy/Ivybridge CPU and I don't know how much extra power an overclocked 920 requires.

If it were me, I'd see how the single 290X runs at 4k. At that pixel density you might find you don't need AA and your games run acceptably for you. If you do need more grunt, then I'd look at a second GPU and a new PSU just to be safe. The Superflower is an excellent choice if you do decide to go dual GPU.

You'll have to let us know what you decide and how it runs. Not many people currently running 4K screens so all data and experiences are welcome round here.

tbh i was sure whether to order a second card or just give it ago but you just made my mind up single card it is till i try it

thanks willl come back when i get my new screen :)

am i just being dumb or have all the buttons for the smileys gone ??

thanks again
