Yesterday morning my wifes car got hit in her work car park while parked and stationary. There was a witness, they found the guy in work and he admitted he did it. As it was a work car park, the did a drug/alcohol test, both clear and it's all been documented. There is also CCTV footage. He's given my wife his insurance and personal details.

We didn't get the details until later last night which is why we're chasing it up this morning.

Now, are we supposed to tell our own insurance about this or do we fully pursue it through his insurance as he's claimed full responsibility?

Never had to claim before so i'm a bit confused. Just worried about telling our insurance unnecessarily and getting higher premiums in future. I know it shouldn't make a difference as it's not her fault but we all know sometimes it does.

You're meant to inform your own insurance and make the claim through his insurance company.

Tell your insurer that you are pursuing it with his insurance.

You may/will see an increase in your own renewal price.

a non fault claim will not affect your premiums but you do need to inform your insurance company. if she was parked i assume the damage wasn't bad. is he offering to fix it and not go through insurance?

Most definitely will. Mine was always higher until my non fault claim disappeared.

Some insurers load for a non fault claim and some don't

When I had a non fault claim I got quotes without disclosing it and then got a requote based on it being disclosed, then went with someone who wasn't charging me for something that wasn't my fault.

Some insurers even load the premium if you have a non fault incident resulting in no claim being made!

The reasoning is a lot of non fault claims could be prevented with defensive driving and not parking in daft places.

Stats show that drivers who have a non fault claim are likely to have another accident; insurance is based on statistics.

My advice? Use HelpHire, Europa Consultants, the like. Don't faff around with their insurance company.

Thanks for all the replies, basically confirmed what I thought, that we need to speak to our own insurers and that our premium will likely get hiked up at renewal.

The guy wants to pursue through insurers, he's already spoken to his.

I had a non fault claim earlier this year and went through the third parties insurance. I notified my insurer (Esure) and they said it will be logged as notified them but not a claim and shouldn't affect renewal price. We will see at renewal time!
