I'm very very near now to my build and I have already started buying some components, the motherboard and CPU (i7-4770k) I have not yet ordered.

Anyway I was going to buy the Asus Xondar DG 5.1 sound card but as I changed my mind on motherboard and will be getting the VII Hero, it has onboard audio and immediately thought I could save myself £20 or so and put towards something else, provided the onboard sound is good.

Does anyone have this motherboard or have any experience with the built in sound, things like quality etc? Also would it be able to record audio coming from the sound card through Audacity as an example?

Thanks :)

the onboard should be good enough imo,try it first, can always order a sound card later

you should be able to record the sound yes through stereomix

Tbh i haven't been impressed at all with the supreme FX audio on my board in sig. Dull and tinny compared to the Asus xonar DX i was using. I suspect even the cheaper DG will sound a lot better.

Seem to be getting mixed information on this as others have said its good and other say not so good.

I could do what wazza300 said and get one later if it doesn't work out but I kind of like to get everything done at once and then forget about it. My budget has stretched slightly over £1500 and so money saved off the sound card would be a help, even if it went towards a better cooler or something.

I might just go with the onboard sound and hope for the best but hopefully a few others can post in with there experiences and then I can make a better decision :)

Thanks

they use newer realtek alc 1150 sound chips on z97,on my z77 they are alc 892 I think

ive also use a xonar dx in the past and sound was decent but I had to keep fiddling with the settings to get the best from it,onboard I can just set and forget

you probably would do better getting good quality speakers/headphones

This is what I like the idea of just set and forget. but am worried about poor quality, crackling and popping/distortion etc.

it should be fine, best way is try and see first, dont get any crackling/popping on my z77 or z68 board so you shouldn't either on z97

on initial install the on board sound was very poor in my opinion, I had gone from a xonar D2X and thought I would try the on board as the reviews said that the sound on board was excellent. I then put my D2X on and obviously the sound then was very good. I bought this board because I wanted to try the on board sound and if it was ok I was going to recoup some money by selling the D2X.

I then saw a new bios update on the Asus website for the board and saw that after installing the bios it said update the on board audio drivers to the latest issue. I did this and I must say that the sound is now much better...especialy in games as I am using the Roccat Kave headset.

The sound is probably not up to the same standard as a D2X but I would say it is certainly on par with the sound cards you are talking about. I have also used those cards so I know how good/bad they are. Hope this helps.

I have the Z87 Hero which i believe is still the same audio chip as the Z97 version. I had a Creative Soundblaster Z previously and the sound was quite flat and dull out of the box. With a bit of tweaking I have got the onboard set up nicely and the sound is pretty good. There's another new driver released in the past week or so which may improve thing a tad more.

Thanks for posting everyone, so sounds like after some updating and tweaking it should be good enough. I will see how it goes and decided whether a dedicated sound card would be worth it or not.

Just a heads up, having finished my build I can honestly say the onboard sound is really good. I was expecting nothing great to be honest and I have not even changed anything but the sound quality is as good as a dedicated sound card in my opinion, works very well with headphones too.

So if anyone else is considering this board and are unsureon whether to buy a separate sound card or not I would say there is no need, but try it yourself and see if it would be worth it or not like others have said.
