My 2550k has died. Should i buy a direct replacement for £170 or go the red route with an 8320 and new board for the same money? Any difference in performance???

Remember buying it from the ocuk shop but unsure how long ago. Can't find a receipt.

The Ivy Bridge generation hit the shelves in the spring/summer of 2012 so it should still be in warranty as the box intel cpus have 3 years of warranty. Check your emails, you do not need a receipt if you have an account in the eshop you bought it from. Contact the RMA department and they should give you a replacement or give you your money back if they do not have it in stock. Just make sure you have the box cooler as well because you will need to send it too. I hope you have not delided it or something else that voids the warranty. You also need to keep the small manual that comes with the cpu and the box cooler for the warranty to be valid.

Fair enough. Pretty sure i don't have the box/cooler anyway so will just buy a replacement

Get it replaced under RMA is what I'd do. I don't know why anyone would ever splash out for another 170 quid, on what is a stagnant performance net gain.

I wouldn't jump to the AMD either from a 3570K, because for gaming, most of the time, it's little more than a downgrade.

That said, why do you think it's the CPU that's broke? I've abused some CPU's, but never had one break.

Pc powered off last night whilst gaming. Tried to post a couple of times, failed and then stayed off. Have removed every non essential component and taken out/reseated the cpu. I get power but no post. Have reset cmos and tried another gfx card. There is also a red led on my mobo that suggests the cpu is in error state.

There's hardly a surplus of cheap cpus on MM to pick from. Just realised that its a 2550k i have, not a 3570. Does this affect anyone's advice. Apologies for the dis-info

Have tried the men sticks individually but don't have spares of board or mem to try. The red led suggesting the cpu is faulty is not a good judge of character then? Many thanks to all for replies/advice

It's just rare for a CPU to die, too rare to just replace it on the off.

I mean, I wouldn't be happy until I've got the PC working, then RMA offending parts, for example, CPU side, couldn't that sensor go off from the boards 4/8 pin being duff? Or a PSU being duff on the 4/8 pin?

Get the CPU out and boot without it in the socket. If the mobo gets into a state where it says put CPU the problem is probably in the CPU. Otherwise if it still fails in any way, it's probably the mobo or memory. The 2550K changes everything as its warranty might be over. As I said, check your email for 2550K and find when and from where you bought it. I'm sure they will be able to deal with this if it's CPU. For free of course.

Do you ACTUALLY mean 2550K, or do you mean 2500K?

2550K will have warranty even if you bought it at launch, a 2500K wouldn't

Advice hasn't changed (Although a 3570K would be a slight upgrade and you'd get PCI-E 3.0)
