After recently signing up to Reed.co.uk and Total Jobs, received an email offering a free CV review.

Has anyone, who has used these, provide any useful details around their process?

Are they any good? Biased to a type of CV style? Recommended?

No they are gash.

Well my experience with them was... I asked for it "cos it was free"
It had a spelling mistake on it and the guy reformatted it in a hideous style.
Saved his Office format over it with file permissions and other Tag information all in his name and company name... Bloody idiots.

I'm sure they just use them to leech info. :p

some recruiters will help you with this to an extent.... one recruiter wanted me to change my layout and sent me a 'template' - turned out his template was essentially the CV of a recent candidate that had had a lot of interest (albeit with some personal information removed)...

To be fair there are a lot of people here that can help you, but lots of dicks (like me too, so take the rough with the smooth and suck it up. ;)

I know there are and if you were genuinely offering assistance, I appreciate it. However, it's hard to tell on this forum ;)

I've been lucky to had an MD as a family friend for a very long time who has assisted me in redesigning the CV, but I can't keep bugging him every time I change something. I've still not settled on the content, but getting their slowly.

From my experience, when people have posted asking for assistance with their CVs in general discussion, the critique is usually very constructive (although expect a range of opinions and tastes etc)

This. Plus you get to ask more questions and get more points of view here.

Sounds like someone trying to harvest your info. You just have to ask what commercial benefit do they get? Because they certainly aren't doing it for free.

As opposed to GD - where we give advice for the lolz.

I wouldn't bother with them. They usually end up turning a perfectly adequate CV into the kind of overblown flowery nonsense that gets routed straight in to the bin.

If you want it checked then I would honestly try it here in GD. You'll get hundreds of views from people from all backgrounds and get a very wide range of opinions, so you'll be able to adapt the CV to each specific role you're applying for easier as there will be people here who already do it. Give it a shot at the very least - what have you got to lose? :)
