Hi all,

I'm after an estate car that I can stick the bikes in when I want and to not worry about when driving down lumpy tracks when hill walking.

There is a 51 plate legacy estate for sale nearby with 54k miles, 2.0 n/a petrol engine on an automatic box, it's up for £800.

Anyone here have any experience with these, how reliable is the auto box and awd system on these? Anything to look out for? The bodywork and sills seem fine.

Thanks for help.:)

It's not on autotrader, and I don't think it's on their website yet as it's only just come in. Will check tho.

I'm really just after general advice on the engine, awd system and auto gearbox and what to look out for on a test drive.

Cheers.:)

e - It's got MOT till april 2015, it's a Legacy Gl with patchy service history since 24k miles which is a shame but I guess FSH for £800 is unlikely.

Iirc, the N/A versions are dog slow and still terrible economy and just generally a poor engine. Though it could be another model of Subaru that I'm thinking of...

My dad used to run a legacy 2.0 N/A, but in a manual. I'm pretty sure 25-28mpg was the norm, and it only had 120bhp or thereabouts. It felt quick off the mark with its 4WD, but wasn't a fast car by any stretch. More than adequate for every day driving and overtaking with a bit of foresight.

Reliability wise, it went from 6 months old and a few thousand miles when he bought it to 200,000 miles on the clock 16 years later with only routine servicing. Never an issue with anything whatsoever. No welding, no engine work. He used to tow the caravan with it, so I think had the clutch changed once or twice, but that was it.

That certainly seems appropriate for the Forester, if not the Legacy. I drove both N/A and turbo Foresters back to back and despite only having about 20bhp difference the turbo was way nicer to drive. I suspect the same may be true of the Legacy.

Thanks, I think if the test drive doesn't feel too slow then I'll probably go for it, hopefully I'll be able to get the price down a couple of hundred, you never know!

90's legacy, the one from the early 90s anyway, when they had the turbo in the range, was a great car.

Later on as they became bloated, ugly and heavy, not so much.

My Forester S/Tb was a lot more than 20 bhp better than the n/a model ;)

Back on track the n/a Legacy is a great car but the 4wd adds fuel consumption and drag which is only really offset by the turbo model. However, if you can live with the fuel and performance (which isn't dreadful) they are good to live with.
