Plastic bag tax

Sure, why not? Been doing here in in Wales for ages. I just buy the "bag for life" jobbies and swap them out when they get holy - it certainly cuts down on trash.

I agree with it 100% and 5p is a joke unless they don t increase the quality of the bags back to what they were a few years back.

I'm sure the supermarkets will find someway of getting around it. They'll start supplying big brown paper bags like you see in the States.

As for the tax I do agree with it. As mentioned above we use the 'bag for life' bags.

The supermarkets and most the other shops over here have been charging for plastic bags for years now..(including places like B&Q)

5p for each of the crappy really thin plastic bags
10p for each of the stronger plastic bags

Supermarkets to charge for bags

Shoppers are to be charged 5p for plastic carrier bags by supermarkets in Guernsey from 6 May.
All supermarkets on the island have agreed to charge for carrier bags with the money raised used for local environmental projects.

More than 10 million plastic bags are used per year in Guernsey.

Supermarkets will be expected to give the proceeds to charity under a voluntary code. Smaller businesses will be exempt.
Nope, I can't see how the large supermarkets and medium sized stores could possibly turn that to their advantage.

Firstly the thread title is misleading. It's not a tax. Tax would imply the proceeds go to the government whereas, in this case, the proceeds are intended to be used for good causes.

Secondly, it's about bloody time. I'm always disappointed to see how many people in the supermarket still use carrier bags. I can't remember the last time I got a carrier bag from a supermarket. For a modest outlay, I bought various "bag for life" type bags several years ago and I'm still using them (and will be for years to come). Not only are they more environmentally friendly, I find them much better to use - stronger and more comfortable to carry.

It's such a shame so many people have to be forced to care for the environment under threat of financial penalty, rather than a desire to do the right thing.

100% agree, I wish the government would also legislate against stupid packing materials like Polystyrene!

We had a new kitchen fitted recently and we had loads of the stuff, took me 4 trips to the tip to get rid of it all, straight into landfill :(

Been using canvas and hemp bags since I started shopping at Aldi / Lidl on a regular basis (5 years ago). Even when I visit the major 4, I bring the same bags, became a habit.

It's not that hard and it helps the environment, don't see it as a problem / "tax"ing.

Costs 2p in Scotland from CO-OP stores but some other places are also following suit with the same price point.

Don't mind too much. often brings my shop to a nice round number.

This now means I may as well buy plastic bin liners rather than reuse old carrier bags. So I’ll probably use more plastic as a result.
