Two 12-year-old girls in the US state of Wisconsin have been accused of stabbing a classmate in order to please an online fictional character.

Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier have been charged with attempted murder and face up to 65 years in prison.

The unnamed victim was stabbed 19 times on Saturday and left in the woods.

The girls reportedly planned the crime to demonstrate dedication to Slenderman, a character who appears in stories on the website Creepypasta.

Something Awful has posted a statement, written by Zack "Geist Editor" Parsons, where he calls the accused 12-year-olds "dumb as hell" for believing in the Slenderman myth.

In the article, called Please Don't Kill Anybody Because of Slenderman, Parsons says: "Found footage Youtubes, shaking cameras and bad Photoshops of people with socks on their head standing in the woods should not be fooling anyone.

"Especially not 12-year-olds who should be better at the Internet and media culture than actual adults."

Literal WTF. I wonder how many people actually believe a lot of the creepypasta stories..

about the 2 girls who attacked their classmate, honestly...wtf

as for the victim I am both sorry and I have to also say well done for crawling from that forest despite the 19 stab wounds and severe pain she must have been suffering at the time. Get well soon.

The likelyhood is that if it hadn't been slenderman it would have been something else this girl would have latched onto.

However, I guess the internet offers an almost unlimited mythos for these type of people to get drawn into. In the 80s or 90s it would have been just a book or film.

Or some nearby cult/ religion

What's creepypasta? :/

Creepypasta is a popular subgenre of copypasta which consists of short horror fictions and urban legends mainly distributed through word of mouth via online message boards or e-mail. In recent years, some authors have re-appropriated the genre into an effective pretext for bait-and-switch trolling.

That's not a website's fault though. Also, unsurprising reports of mental instability in the main aggressor being aired.

yup totally not suprising, she still deserves hard time though for commiting this atrocity

I would say yes, they could be more internet-savvy than their parents, but as they are 12, they are also incredibly impressionable, and open to believing anything they may read.

But to say that they 'should be better at the Internet and media culture than actual adults' is simply absurd. For legal purposes you're typically considered an adult from the age of 18, and I'm willing to bet the average 18 year old is far more adept with the internet and social media than a 12 year old.
