Im heading out in a few weeks and wondered if the local staff preferred tips in Lira or another currency? I know in Egypt they said they preferred USD as they could get a better rate for it.

Sterling was a big fave when I went x2 years ago, they loved the stuff. USD are good anywhere.

This has been my experience as well, don't even bother with Lira to be honest Sterling or Euro was much prefered.

My parents go the same resort in Alanya every bleedin' year they can't get enough of it. I went there once and it's ok but I got board in the evenings as there's very little to do outside of the resort.

My tip would be to find a member of staff you like early on the trip and tip him/her at the start then in the evenings when it's busy and you want a drink they will remember your face.

I really hated the country, people constantly bombarding you with buy this, get this, do this and etc. More importantly (and without trying to come off racist) the men were just incredibly rude toward my girlfriend at the time, constantly telling her how big her boobs were and other not very tasteful stuff, while I was stood next to her!

Edit

The location was Marmaris and Bodrum same as the post below..

Bodrum and Marmaris.. Went there in 99 when the missus and I were skint, cos we'd just put down a deposit on a new place. Cheapest holiday FOR A REASON.

Every other shop is a jeweler (selling low grade mostly crap) or leather shop. The men lear over your woman, hang out in groups.

I will NEVER return.

I had the same experience, I've never wanted to tear somebodys head off so much.

Went to marmaris 3 years ago, was lovely. People were nice too, very friendly. Hotel staff were a bit to controlling on what you could bring back with you food wise, drink including water bottles but aside from that really enjoyed it.

I went to Icmeler and spent a bit of time in Marmaris last month.

I was skeptical about going, had heard about the shop keepers and the learing etc. and was a bit put off, but regardless thought I would give it a chance considering it was just a cheapo break.

It wasn't as bad as I anticipated, at the end of the day, they don't know any different and are just trying to make a living, a lot of them will work on commission etc. Some of them where quite funny actually, I remember one shouting "Cheaper than Primark". Couldn't help but have a little chuckle.

As for currency, I wish I had of just took pounds tbh and a maybe some Lira just incase.
Make sure you haggle if you do buy anything, quite a few of the restaurants where advertising prices in pounds.
