Headphones at OcUK - An Update

Hey Rich, just a thought but if this is successful you really should expand into HiFi and TV speakers. You was with me when I bought my Tannyo floorstand speakers, I love them they are ace! The places to buy online can be limited at times, maybe worth you looking into them too.

how do the HE400 do for gaming? also what is their sound signature like?

Really good actually. They remind me of a fully open D2000. Nice thick low end; explosions and other sounds in the low end sound tight and controlled. Mids and treble are fairly balanced. They are warm, immersive with good positional accuracy. Soundstage is good, similar to the HD600.

They have a balanced and tight sound signature. Treble is a bit iffy but nothing bad. They have a slight hint of aggression but it's the right amount! Warm, engaging, fun! They can be pretty much end game like the HD650.

I don't like the idea of them being heavy/uncomfortable as well as having 2 wires (which many have spent a lot of money on replacing as it doesn't do the job).

I think I'll just sell my 595's and get 558's and do the mod on them.

Keep the modded 558's for competitive gaming and X1's for everything else.

Don't like the look of AD700's and 595/598 are on similar level for competitive gaming just slightly worse but then they can be used for music no issue whereas the AD700 is a no go.

Next year I'll hopefully get a NAD D 3020 and some tannoy floorstanders for a hifi/office setup.

After the above I think that's me. I have 4 sets of IEM's now as well as HD25-1 II's for portable setups. One gaming can and one music/movies can.

Oh and in a few months I'll get some edifiers (if they go back on sale) or something for my home gym speakers as my all in one system died.

They are not as heavy as people say. But then it all depends on the individual. If you heard them you wouldn't want anything else, they are spectacular! If you want something on a similar level as the HE400 with a more thicker, liquid and engaging sound that is more comfortable get the 650!

HE400 are £178 brand new in USA (going there for a holiday next week). The HD650 is £300 brand new in USA.

It's almost double the price.

Forgot Senn put the price up. They are worth it though judging by sound. I believe the Beyer pad cushion fits the hifimans headband for comfort.

If you are in the states. Awesome :) I wouldn't buy the he400's for gaming. If I was you, I would get the he500's. I think they are the best value high end head phone you are likely to get.

If you are still getting two phones, then try to get a listen to the CAL 2. Use them as your gaming phone.

Only problem with that is a lot of people like to demo their HiFi before they buy it and as such would OcUK be willing to provide this service?

But you are the one that rubbished my claims that the 558 couldn't be modded to sound like the 598 and this despite not having heard either phone.

It's actually 598 > hd558 modded > hd595

The important word in your last post is "reading" You haven't actually tried either headphone?

I don't know what those guys on Head fi are on. You will get a better and more honest opinion of headphones here or on OCN.

And like Rids57 says, don't know why I am telling you this stuff, because you aren't going to change your mind but here goes, there isn't £2 difference in sound never mind £20. In my opinion the only reason to get the 598 over the 558 is if you prefer the look.

Just look at the photo of the inside of both phones on this link.

Spot the difference!!

Knowing what both headphones sound like, I would save the £20 and put that money towards an amp/sound card/drinks at the weekend :D

Oh, wow, you replied, you still don't believe the people on this thread who actually tried the phones? Anyway, the guy in that article is wrong, the 555 and 595 use different drivers, the part number for the 555/595 drivers are 512806 and 512807 (left and right) The drivers for the 558/598 are 934818 and 934819 (left and right)

The 558/598 are better built upgrades to the 555/595, they don't suffer as much cracking and they sound a little better too.

Sound wise, 558(modded) and 598 are nearly identical, same with the 555(modded) and 595

As for the article you linked to, it's such a turnaround from his first article. Wonder why he changed his mind? Not really, you can probably figure out why without too much effort ;)

Oh btw, it was Rids57 who linked to the first headfonia article, not me.

Again, the only reason to get the 598 over the 558 is if you like the look. And nothing wrong with that.

Just so you know I actually purchased 558's (brand new for a bargain price of £80) and I am selling my 595's.

I was going to keep them stock but your convincing me to mod them.

I think I'll leave them stock for now. Are you really sure they are better modded? Is the bass loose or tight?

My 558's actually arrived today and my 595's are now on auction.

"On the first HD558 & HD598 article, I had posted a mod that was supposed to make the HD558 closer to the sound of the HD598. As with many modifications, however, when you gain some you also lose some. And the HD558 mod does sacrifice some amount of bass control, resulting in a slightly boomy bass area. Without going into too much detail on other changes with the mod, I felt that in the long run, the stock HD558 configuration is the better version, and I’ve reverted my HD558 back to the stock configuration. Ultimately, the HD598 is still the better version between the two (a point-by-point comparison between the HD558 and the HD598 can be found a few paragraphs down). "

his points do sound quite convincing as do yours

"HD555 (mod) vs HD558 (mod):

The HD555 has slightly more emphasis on the upper midrange, which is nice, but at the same time feels thinner at the bottom end. The HD558′s upper mid is slightly less forward than the HD555′s, but both headphones are quite forward in the upper mid.
The HD558′s is smoother throughout the overall frequency range than the HD555′s.
The HD558′s bass is fuller and has better extension to the low bass notes. The HD555′s bass is slightly tighter than the HD558′s, where the HD558 can sound a little boomy in the bass.
Bass punch on the HD555 is slightly punchier, while the HD558 has a weightier bass.
Soundstage performance of the HD558 is noticeably better, especially in the depth area. A more three dimensional soundstage, versus the left-right soundstage of the HD555.
Overall the HD558 mod is the better headphone, although I do wish that the HD558 (mod) can retain a tighter bass control like on the HD555 (mod)."

Actually it's quite funny how he doesn't compare HD558 modded to HD598 stock, I did find that really really odd.

Now that you have pointed it out I'm convinced he had to do the article that way because Sennheiser must have told him off or something.

I'll mod mine in a month or two, keeping them stock for now to get used to them so I know the difference for when I do the mod.

Need some feed back from you guys.

Creative Aurvana 2 Aurvana Gold and Aurvana Platinum.

Don't really have a problem with the Aurvana 2 as at sub £100 but the Gold an plat does anyone have any experience with them.

Naturally it's less risk for us with Creative as we already work with them their supply chain is in place and they have some control over the channel so prices aren't completely mental.

From what I have read they are better but there are better headphones out there for the money.

I would stick with just lives forget 3, gold and platinum or maybe get 1-2 of the more expensive models to see how they do.

It's the original live model that's worth it

The problems with the 2's (which I have), is that the price has fluctuated wildy since they came out.

I got mine for £80.00 direct from Creative, though have since seen them as low as £62.00 on you know where. They seem to be back up to £99.00 in most places which is a little too steep over the original ones.

For £80.00 I am very pleased with them.

I just got HD558's brand new for £80 which would you rather have? Sure it was a one off but I'm sure there are similar deals out there for other headphones.

CAL 1 at £50 = great deal.

CAL 2 at £85+ = not so much

may be worth trying a few but I wouldn't order tons because there's better headphones out there for that type of cash.

If they can get them and sell them for £65-70 then they could sell well

They are releasing them in black and red from what I gather. I will see what I can do on price I don't see any of our rivals stocking the CAL 2 yopu know where will price match us no matter what I do. I would say that the price will be less than Creatives MSRP everything is below that.

Think the others may just be too expensive for our target audience to start with.

the gold's and platinum's seem to have gone all out for gimmicks (active noise cancelling, bluetooth, etc.) and forgotten all about sound quality and comfort - I wouldn't bother.
