Hey folks,

I've been tasked with putting together a relatively cheap PC (£300 MAX) for my girlfriend's family to use. They will mainly use it for emails, surfing the web etc, nothing too taxing.

They already have peripherals, so this budget is only for the tower itself. I think I'll also need to include an OS in this budget (preferably Windows 8).

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

Sorry for the quite old bump, but I like the look of this one. Would it be easy enough to throw in a GPU at some point in the future here?

Also, I'm guessing this PSU isn't modular, are modular ones much more expensive?

Cheers

Yep, easy to slot in a low-midrange GPU in there. I've updated the spec to reflect todays pricing, new releases etc. :)
YOUR BASKET
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £43.99
1 x Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £41.99
1 x MSI H81M-P33 Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £33.95
1 x SuperFlower Amazon 300W "80 Plus Bronze" Power Supply £29.99
1 x Zalman T1U3 Mini-Tower USB 3.0 - Black £20.99
Total : £315.38 (includes shipping : £11.25).

And in doing so have only included a 300W PSU rather than a 500W, which won't be able to power the same kinds of GPU's. :p

Thanks for the update :)

Would you recommend a low-end GPU which I could throw in here? Not sure how necessary it's going to be but I'm sure it couldn't hurt. (I opted for the 500W power supply).

Alright folks, I've pieced together a few bits and pieces from suggested builds here.

Could someone just give this a quick glance over to make sure there are no incompatibilities before I order?

Yeah I actually didn't mean to include it, decided it probably wasn't necessary. It won't be used for gaming, but without any GPU there shouldn't be a problem streaming HD videos etc, right?

Why 8gb of 2400mhz RAM? This isn't a gaming machine. You could easily drop to 4gb of 1600mhz and still have more than enough power.

The NZXT Hale Power 90+ 550W is a much better PSU being both Gold rated and made by Superflower. It's only a few £s more.

I'd strongly suggest three things:

  • Don't buy the GPU. It's a waste of money as the integrated graphics will be perfectly fine.
  • The 1000 GB mechanical hard drive is too large and slow. Replace it with a small SSD.
  • 8 GB isn't needed for browsing, 4 GB will be plenty.

1 x Kingston 60GB SSDNow V300 Drive SATA 6Gb/s 3 2.5" (7mm height) Solid State Hard Drive - (SV300S37A/60G) £39.95
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C8 1333MHz Dual-Channel (CMX4GX3M2A1333C8) £37.99
Total : £87.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I recently put together a similar system:

Intel G3420
AsRock H81M-HDS
Kingston V300 60GB
TeamGroup Elite 4GB DDR3
Windows 8.1

And it's absolutely great for general use.

I agree with the 4GB instead of 8 actually. Its a nice easy way to shave off 30 quid. Thanks folks, will go ahead and order this tonight I reckon.
