Why 'Watch Dogs' Is Bad News For AMD Users -- And Potentially The Entire PC Gaming Ecosystem

I suppose, but if Nvidia had stronger branding already,it would be AMD trying to displace that from people's memory.

Personally,I think the consoles might be able to help AMD in the PR stakes more,if they sell that angle properly.

Yea it might do if they can advertise it well. Even then the amount of pre bought machines that people buy with onboard graphics expecting to run the latest triple aaa games amazes me. It's usually parents buying for there sons and daughters. Half these machines as so clogged with rubbish i can barely get into windows lol to see what they have on there spec wise. Mention graphics and if they do know anything its does tend to be Nvidia. A lot of the time its nothing.

Probably them trying to play catch up ;)
I don't see what advertising them being in consoles will do, when PC gaming is supposed to offer you a better gaming experience over console anyway :D

Isn't most the discreet market done with prebuilt computers and not how we buy them?

Millions of people will use consoles, and if they work fine,it will only make AMD look a strong brand for gaming, especially if big companies like MS and Sony are fully behind using AMD graphics hardware. It will indicate that both AMD hardware and software is good enough.

Plus I still think the changeover from ATI to AMD graphics branding was not a good idea. It lead to a break in continuity which the Geforce branding did not. Its surprising how many people do not realise ATI and AMD are the same company now.

Most sites I have checked lets you spec your machine but a lot of people still deal with the men in purple shirts. My daughters man worked in there for years yet hes pretty clueless on pc hardware.

The change from ATI to AMD wasn't a bad thing, a rebrand can work...if the name you're changing to wasn't already dying lol. Having the graphics cards attached to poor performing CPUs really doesn't help :p
That's me though ;)

Not been in the shops in a very very long time, no idea what spec computers they sell. Probably deal more in tablets though, as that's what people want currently. Doubt they do any towers, laptops probably?
Edit: Checked the online store, was on about in store at above ^ Turns out AMD is seen as budget on there, nothing with AMD graphics £900+ price points, most expensive tower being £1600.

Last time I was in they had equal amounts on display. Was around 10-12 of each. The specs on the pcs are pitiful for what you get especially on the graphics side. Most usually have multimedia cards that are barely capable of playing games. Have not checked there online store for obvious reasons lol. Yea funny thing is nothing is budget in Pc world in the real sense.

The best one I heard was my mate paying 400 for what he was told was top of the range from your usual happy purple guy. I think it was something along the lines of Ati 9200 when I had a 9800 which cost less.

Same guy is now rocking a Nvidia gtx670 on one of the first amd dual core cpus. Cant get him to listen after all hismistakes in buying hardware. He did make a decent choice in card mind you but the rest of his machine is not up to the task.

Here you go. and this is the reference one which throttles.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_290X/27.html

Fortunately some of us don't run our Titans at 980MHz with throttling down to ~876MHz or ~837MHz.

Once everything is OC'd the only card that can beat the Titan is a 780Ti classified.

Now if you don't OC then sure. However I'm not sure that's such a great argument considering the name of this forum.

AMD just played the same card with Hawaii that Nvidia did with GK104. Clock it much closer to its maximum than the competition. This is why Tahiti was better than GK104 for overclockers and for the same exact reason GK110 is better for overclockers than Hawaii is.

And I'm willing to go up against any watercooled 290X. Any of them. and I'll beat that 290X in probably nine out of ten synthetic/game benches. There isn't an aircooled or a watercooled AMD GPU on this planet that can match my Titan. And My titan isn't even the fastest Titan. You should see some of the stuff over at OCN.

But then again ever since the AMD guys changed their tone after Tahiti vs. GK104 the argument against OC vs OC comparisons has pretty much been "You're OCing too much Q_Q".

Not everyone on here overclocks. Not everyone water cools. I used to post comments like that over in the general hardware and cpu sections to get this response. ;)

Congratulations on your Titan success though!

I mentioned price earlier, sorry for that.

mmj did say amd fanboys in his post, maybe his post was aimed at amd fanboys only, and not none brand loyal amd users.

Years ago, not currently.
AMD's gaming brand has been everywhere, you just have to look at some of these signatures....(Tommy's changes, but still :D) to get an idea on what they've been doing. Very strong, very clear. AMD is for gaming.

My signature was created from a forumite offering to do it. Nice guy. I chose the branding as:

a) I seemed to be defending AMD as the underdog in most CPU/GPU threads and also in some peoples naive minds I was a fanboy.
b) It seems to irritate the ignorant or naive people mentioned in a).

The people you were describing who buy from places like PC world would not fall into the 'enthusiast' category. Much like people buying bikes seem to go to Halfords.. :)

I was talking about Journalists who write articles not fanboys. Getting value for your money ain't a bad thing especially when its as good as the competition. All Nvidia hold over AMD these days is a brand name. They both have different features ie AMD have Mantle and True Audio and Nvidia have Physx and Gameworks. I don't see Nvidia being worth there premium even if at some points over the years they might well have been.

I don't get how anyone with common sense can agree with what MMJ_UK said. Well maybe Lambchop but his signature says it all. The funny thing is this is a Watchdogs thread and the majority of people having the best experience are using Amd in there Ps4 and Xboxone which in some PC owners eye's is like being on the dole when it comes to gaming.

Just catching up in this thread and found someone with common sense! :o

Jeez that was three pages and most was just guff or Greg ducking and diving.

I still want to see Humbug beat me :D

He wouldn't, even if he had a faster R9 290 because of his CPU, so it's merely an argument of semantics at the moment.

Not that I think stock versus stock an R9 290 beats a Titan, I think an R9 290X reaches parity with the Titan (Wins on both sides, depending on the games), stock versus stock, but that's about it.

And I know for a fact my R9 290 wouldn't best your Titan :p

Fixed that :D

The whole thread is guff. Not once have nVidia been proven to sabotage AMD in GameWorks but for some reason, the thread is still going strong. Extremetech have had 3 articles (could be more) on GameWorks and sadly, they are all the same drivvle about "could and bad nVidia"

I am not defending nVidia btw but looking at it from outside the box, I can't see what they have done wrong and have progressed gaming features instead. Maybe I should start a thread praising GameWorks tech :)

I was only teasing anyways but I am always up for a good benching throw down. And I was very drunk :D
