General anaesthetic, closest to death you can get?

When I had my appendix out it was odd waking up not knowing where I was and being unaware of my surroundings in those first few waking moments, also not knowing anything that happened during the time I was out.

My first GA was gas at the dentist in 196x - if that's what dying is like, no thank you. Awful bitter sweet smell, suffocating feeling then my body went fuzzy followed by some godawful dreams and visions. Must have been out of it as I don't remember the teeth coming out.

First (and only) "proper" GA was about 6 years ago, IV through a canula. Pretty much as others have described just this lovely woozy feeling coming over me then out of it. I didn't try to count, just said something along the lines of, "Where's the beach man...I'll shut up and have a nap now", to the anaesthetist. Next thing I was waking up in the recovery room, cold and shaking but once that passed I did feel a euphoric buzz, not tired or sleepy at all.

Whether that's what dying of natural causes feels like I guess would depend on the circumstances. I would imagine a heart attack, stroke or aneurism is going to be accompanied by considerable pain before loss of consciousness. When my mother had her first heart attack (the one she survived) she described the sensation as a bit like an old tube TV when it switched off - everything black with a fading dot of light in the middle.

Heart attacks are pretty grim. First one was like having my arm in a vice while it was bring tightened and having an elephant sit on my chest. Thankfully I didn't arrest, but even morphine didn't take the pain away.

As a kid I was put under and while I don't remember it the nurse told my parents that I tried to jump out of bed when I woke up. My arm being in a sling didn't help my efforts much :o

It is a weird feeling going under with the cold sensation of the injection going in but all so peaceful. I think if death is like that then its a blessing really.

I went under for the first time ever just over a week ago for a cholecystectomy. I was so nervous about the whole thing. There's so much going on around you while the anaesthetic is administered you forget about the fact you were crapping it 10 mins earlier.

I know one thing - if you do have to go, while under wouldn't be such a bad thing. You'd know absolutely nothing about it. I'd even go as far to say I fear dying less than I did before the op. There's rather profound!

No because your bladder muscle stops working. You can't wee. My op was at 7:30AM - I could have been home by 2:00PM the same day but I couldn't wee!

Was given general anaesthetic only a few weeks ago for a hernia operation. I was terrified at the thought of losing all control but they kept talking to me and the next minute I was gone. I then woke up feeling like I was recovering from a shot of heroin or something. Completely off my face which was great whilst it lasted :) I guess we enter such a deep sleep that we might as well be dead.

I always come round feeling like total ****! :( Once i had a machine pumping in a pain killer through a canula in my foot, they removed the tube for the pain killer but forgot to the block the canula, i commented to a passing nurse a while after that my feet felt strangely sticky. she tried to brush it off saying that it was hot in the recovery room and that it was just sweat but i insisted that this didn't feel sweaty. Cue her grabbing a team of male nurses and having them lift me up while they changed my blood stained bed clothes. needles to say this was extremely painful after a big op (nerve graft) i'm just glad i wasn't sleeping at the time but i imagine it would take a very long time to bleed to death though a canula. I also used to be violently sick with projectile vomiting after the first few. :(

When i had my first general anesthetic,I didn't feel anything up my arm just remember my sight going hazy then nothing..waking up i was shaking like mad and kept falling back to sleep, after they woke me up after the op.

As for closest to death,Maybe..i hope that's how it goes anyway. :)

You made me type lol for the first time on the internet.

I've had 3 operations but the most weirdest for me was at the Dentists during the 80s and something that still haunts me.
Because I was having so much work done he said he would give me a relaxant and keep me in the chair for 2 hours and I remember at exactly 10am the needle going in.
At 10:40am I woke up and told the Dentist who said that I hadn't been asleep.
The following week I woke up 35 minutes later and once again he said I hadn't been asleep and I'd been replying and following when asked.
I still wonder what secrets I told him.

I would be more worried what the dentist did to you whilst you were under lol did you have any piles when you got home by any chance lmao

When I was put under a few months back for the first time ever it was as if I had time traveled as it felt like NO time had passed what-so-ever from being put to sleep and then waking up over an hour later!?!?!
Very strange sensation indeed, they did say they had never seen anyone as alert/un-groggy after waking up  I think I was just happy I wasn't dead and perplexed at what the heck had just happened and where the bloody time had gone??? Very weird :-/

Very different feeling/sensation than having a normal sleep/nap!!
