Does 2 x 3GB = 1 x 6GB Vram ?

I know this sounds a bit like an obvious question, but I just want to make sure.

I have a 30" monitor (2560x1600) and was wondering if games would utilize
the 3GB vram on 2 x graphics card (In SLI), the same as they would do, on 1 x 6GB graphics card ?

No it doesn't, you still only have 3Gb of USABLE VRAM.

The data between the cards is mirrored so running 2 or more cards only increases the raw processing power and not the amount of memory a game can use.

Nope you only get 3GB total. Each card has to have the same information duplicated on them so they can both render alternate frames.

I pretty much thought that to be honest, but just wasn't sure.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

It's a shame that, it doesn't work like that, as many more people, might
invest in a second card, resulting in more sales.

But for obvious technical reasons, I presume its impossible.

If you are willing to forego traditional AFR and create a custom solution you can theoretically stack the VRAM. However only 1 card will be spitting out frames and AFAIK this is just a future scenario from Mantle dev talks, nobody has done this except for people using dedicated PhysX cards.

I'm very surprised they can't stack the RAM of multiple cards, surely it's only the software side of things that need to change?
