Metal studs installed to stop homeless people from sleeping outside private flats in London have been described as "brutal" by a homelessness charity.

Residents at the block on Southwark Bridge Road said they appeared a few weeks ago after someone had been sleeping rough there.

In reaction, Howard Sinclair, Chief Executive of St Mungo's Broadway, said: "Each year our teams, in Southwark and elsewhere, help thousands of people off the streets.

"Part of their role is to prevent people adopting a street lifestyle which, on occasions, means adapting the physical environment to prevent people sleeping rough in a particular location on a regular basis. These 'studs' appear a rather brutal way of doing just that."

Its not clear who ordered them and if they are solely to deter rough sleepers but their installation has sparked an angry reaction.

Emi Takehara lives in the block and told Sky News: "I feel really uncomfortable having these spikes in front of my home. It's like treating these homeless people like animals."

Andrew Horton spotted the studs on his way to work and posted pictures of them online.

It is split opinion on Twitter.

While I can sympathise with some homeless people, this doesn't seem the most outrageous thing in the world?

It doesn't look particularly pretty (at all), but when leaving your building in the morning, having to pass a potential group of homeless people isn't something you ideally want? I assume these have been installed as this must be quite a potent problem in that particular area.

Lastly, the homeless are given support if they want it, so can probably find somewhere more suitable than this anyway.

They've put metal studs outside the Tesco opposite my place of work to stop people sitting in the windows eating their lunch. The place I work at actually put hoarding up just before the Olympics because homeless people used to sleep in the windows - I was actually attacked by a hobo for not giving him one of my cigarettes.

Can't see why this is an issue, tbh.

Wont they be surprised when in fact the homeless arent animals and figure that they can just plop some more crap down to soften the studs impact.

Amazing sometimes, why does London even exist?

If it was not for the north you southeners would have died of thirst. We have to send our water down the rivers to you as you do not have enough of your own. Don't worry though as we all like to stand on the river banks urinating in it before it comes your way lol Where do you think the game "poo sticks" comes from.... enjoy :)

back on topic, whats wrong with stopping the homeless sleeping there? Most of the chose to live on the streets, usually are druggies who will stab you for your clothes, and they also smell. I do not see the problem tbh. Actually they may come up north so actually i retract what i previously said and i think it is disgusting you toffs dont let those poor wretches sleep in your gold lined door ways

Oh yeah? Well I took a dump up Darwen Tower when I was a nipper, so consider the debt repaid. :p

On a more serious note, I love Lemon Cheese from Darwen Market. Got me a dealer and everything. OMNOMNOM.

A lot of people on Twitter expressing their outrage would stop short of offering a homeless person a place to sleep, and probably complain if they had to step over them when leaving/entering their homes. Making doorways usable for homeless people to sleep in doesn't really solve an issue, it just gives armchair activists something to blog about.

Its pretty outrageous... I notice they've also got a lock/entry system on the door to keep non-residents from entering communal areas - its just a downwards spiral from there... next thing you know they'll put metal gates on the car park and locks on the bin stores - disgraceful

Came in expecting a video of a virile Black Sabbath fan walking a homeless man on a leash. Left disappointed.
