Uber vs Black Cabs - London Protest

Anything that pushes prices down sounds good to me. Nothing more annoying than a cabby trying to take the mick after a night out just because they think you have had one too many

Can't say I've ever had that problem. In fact my cab fares after the tubes have shut down are always £27-30 from West End to my flat in NW and it's no secret I'm usually intoxicated...

I wonder if the GPS will mean there's a full record of income, not just what the cabbie declares to HMRC. The cabbie I know reckons he only declares about 50% of his earnings.

Shock as old and dated business model is undercut by new, innovative model.

As far as I understand, cabs are regulated differently because they're allowed to pick passengers up off the street on being flagged down, where-as uber are technically private hire and don't have to conform to the same regulations?

Taxi drivers are effectively road terrorists anyway, so they don't have my sympathy.

It's the other services you provide instead of money that are cause for concern

"Sorry mate not going south of the river"
"But you've got your light on!"
*drives off suddenly

Typical Friday night.

Not heard of Uber before, will have to check it out.

From my experience working with cabbies they're more than happy to flout as many rules as they can, but as soon as private hire bend a rule slightly they're up in arms and out mob handed being pains in the backsides.

Yeah, mustn't let working class people to be able to earn a decent wage.

YESP - Yet another scorza post. That deserves a rolleyes if I could be bothered using one.

Black cabs are a rip off. Anything that increases competition in the London taxi market is a good thing.

If it helps competition and keep prices down too it can only be a good thing

Not if it's unfair competition, temporarily you're better off but long term it kills competition and prices then skyrocket.

Not to mention the rise in unemployment when black cabs go out of business due to this unfair practise - one which abuses the legislation and regulations put in place to ensure safe, quality cabs. Killing off the livelihood is self employed people is not a good thing.

Then the next innovative idea comes around and the cycle continues. Feel like I've seen this somewhere before...

Black cabs don't derive advantage through exploiting loopholes, so no.

Instead existing Black Cab members would like it to be a very difficult market to get into maintaining the status quo of a hail and ride monopoly.

When new technology makes minicab firms like uber faster and better at what they do, threatening the black cab market, they want it banned.

If the "knowledge" is such a USP, then people will continue to use Black Cabs. No need for banning of the competition.

Rise in unemployment? Maybe amongst current black cab drivers but as a whole it will lead to increased employment as it won't be a select group of drivers. They will simply be replaced. With cheaper prices more journeys will also take place creating higher demand of new services as well as existing services. Lower price but more jobs.

Let people who pay for these services decide what they want.

Agreed.

I've witnessed "The Knowledge" get somewhere a little quicker than otherwise suggested but 90% (increasing as technology improves) of the time, sat nav will do more than a good enough job these days - even around traffic filled cities. Given that, I'd rather get somewhere in more comfort, pay 50% less and use a taxi without "The Knowledge".

Increased employment doesn't count for anything when the wages are lower, it just means you've got masses of people who can't make ends meet and big pockets of wealth in the wrong sects of society.

And no, with cheaper journeys more won't take place at all. The price elasticity on taxi travel is negligible at best, a price decrease won't suddenly create new demand for taxi journeys.

Taxi driving isn't that difficult to get into - unless you're an ex con or something you can easily set yourself up as a cabbie. Most people don't because the hours are crap and the pay is pretty rubbish unless you work all hours.

As a frequent out of hours London traveler, reduced prices most certainly would increase usage. At the moment, people who are flush with cash use them, people in the middle group up with others to reduce costs, and the rest use (ugh) night buses. Don't underestimate London needs.
