Struggled to get in any miles over the last 4/5 days. 12 hour days at work killed any get up & go on the one day it wasn't lashing it down. Did get a lovely ride in yesterday afternoon ruined ever so slightly when I discovered the council had got merry with the loose chippings along one of my favourite bits on road. Pacing myself much better & getting my average speed up which is what I'm most pleased with though.

Got a build date for my PX Pro Carbon too, 18th June which is under the 21 day build queue. Cant wait! Just need to decided on some replacement tyres for the standard Conti Ultrasports, some very rural roads and decent puncture protection is a must.

Thats fast! Those bikes look like they weigh a ton!

If you've not seen it, the video of someone riding one of them up mont vonteux is worth a look. They got it from London, to mont vonteux, climbed it and then got back to London within the 24 hour time limit so they didn't get a fine :p

Toebox is where it's at for my flipper feet so I'll have to give them a go :)

edit: Currently have Shimano M162s which rub my little toe slightly and the strap on one has started to split in less than 6 months (admittedly a fair few miles) of use. I'm not impressed. I also lost the receipt. Woo.

Giro wide?

I've got thin feet and Giro fit me like a glove.

Specialized are higher across the bridge than Giro. Northwave are wider at the toebox.

Interesting. I found the new Empires to be fairly wide at the mid foot and very roomy in the toe box. Wonder if they're made to a different last.

Ok didn't realise I could access Strava via Android, have downloaded that to use for recording.

Question - If I start recording via strava then lock my phone and put it in my pocket will it still record the ride? Or do I need to have it mounted on the bars and running during the recording process?

It will carry on recording. I keep it in a tube bag or my pocket all ride :)

Okay, almost a year ago to the day I bought myself my first road bike. At the time I was nearly 15 stone and massively unfit. The first bike was only a Viking from Go Outdoors and I had quite a few problems with it, but it did get me interested in biking.

Forward on a year and I have lost quite a bit of weight (little bit more to go now), and today have just done my biggest ride to date. I tried it on Thursday of last week, but it was really quite windy and my legs just cramped up after about 50 miles, so kinda had to abandon the attempt.

Anyway todays: http://www.strava.com/activities/151414573

Happy with it, would have liked the average to have been over 18mph, but only just missed out.

Are cycle clubs worth joining? I have a mate at work that keeps trying to persuade me to join our local club (he goes), but tbh I just ain't as quick as him, and I feel a little like if I go along I will just embarrass myself.

It runs while it's locked. I start it, lock it, stick it in my pocket and forget about it until the end of the ride.

Well, you have to start somewhere. I'm not sure any of us would have endorsed a Viking bike, but it got you going at least!

Good work! That average is very impressive over that distance.

17.9mph over 72.7 miles is plenty fast enough to join a club. Seriously.

Are Michelin Pro4 Endurance tyres any good? Getting Pro 4 Service seems to be a bit awkward at 25mm and the Endurange presumably will take a little longer to wear? edit2: Actually, easy enough to get Service Course tyres but presumably the Endurance have extra puncture protection?

Tempts me although the free inner tube being rated for 23c tyres rather than 25 amuses me somewhat :p

Sounds like awesome progress and if you're able to hold that kind of speed over that kind of distance I reckon there is zero chance of you embarrassing yourself at a cycle club. Perhaps don't go for the highest race level stuff straight off the bat but tbh it looks like you won't struggle at all.

Thanks for the confirmation chaps, just had a call from the bike shop collecting at 5pm tomorrow.

Padded shorts already ordered, don't miss those saddle sore days.

Cheers. To be honest I am not sure I would recommend a Viking to anyone, in hindsight I would have gone second hand for the budget I had. But I only paid £180 for it and got £110 back last week on ebay, so not too bad. Certainly wouldn't fancy doing 70+ miles on it though!

Will look at going to our cycle club next week (working this week so can't), but as FrenchTart said, just go with an intermediate group rather than the really quick group.

Yes, worth joining.

Yes, you're fast enough.

Chances are the club runs are not any faster than 18mph anyway. I would guess that in my club, around 75% of the membership have no interest in racing. Most just want to have a decent ride at the weekend. Speeds are usually 16-18mph.
The club I was in previously had maybe 3-4 members who wanted to race out of about 200ish membership.
It's not all about racing.
