I'm still using my trust S2 and have a hand-me-down Panasonic TV and for some time now i have watched mkv files (generally 720p) by sticking them on a USB stick and then watching them from my PS3. I've done a bit of googling but cant find out if my TV would be compatible with my phone and what exactly i'd need to get going using my phone rather than PS3 to stream. The main reasons why I want to find a cheap alternative to using my PS3 is that i always have to use mkv2vob first on each file and it's often impossible to get subtitles to work properly. I was hoping that using my phone might simplify the process and be more subtitles friendly.

Cheers

Why do you need to convert out of interest, can't you stream from pc to ps3 via DLNA? anyway, you need a specific MHL Cable (there are 2 types out there - check ebay and make sure you get the one for S2's if you go this route) and a spare USB socket or charger - MHL cables need to be powered on the S2. This would just screen mirror your phone to tv screen and upscale it a bit (s2 is... 480x800 or something similar) so you'd need a player for your phone then bobs your uncle.

Alternatively, I'm fairly sure your PS3 is DLNA compatible and your phone can be too with bubblePnP/Skifta/Plex (these are Android apps) and your PC is naturally - if they are all on the same network I'd look into this first :)

I've seen mention of DLNA but dont really know what it is. I was kinda under the impression on high end TV's are DLNA compatible so i assumed that was a no go for me. I'll have to look into it some more.

Also, i used to stream from PC to PS3 using PS3MediaServer but it the PS3's wifi is so poor than it was just a complete pain. I'd prefer to cut the PS3 out of the equation just because its a hassle to use sometimes.

Thanks

You have two options really.

The first option is Chromecast and using Localcast to stream the video. But this is limited to MP4 files. I haven't really tested this. VLC for Android will get Chromecast support soon however so it will bypass the format limitation.

The second option is to get a 5-pin MHL adapter (the newer 11-pin will not work with the S2). This will mirror everything you see on your phone to the screen. And as a video player, use MX Player. I have used this for MKV files with subtitles and it plays just fine, no need to convert. I also use ES File Explorer to connect to my PC so I can play the video files from that instead of having to transfer it to my phone.
