Which GPU for £300 or less

Thanks all.

Yea will have a look at those suggested. Just couldn't be doing with constant overheating. i did have a flick through the GPU section here and it seemed like every other post was a complain about the 290's either overheating or bad driver problems. But if those one linked are ok, then i might consider one of them.

I dont have £300 to spend normally so want to use it wisely.

I know how you feel, and I too am looking for a replacement, which will be my last GPU for a long while.

One thing I will say is I'd always recommend you buy from OCUK, their service is 2nd to none, and should you get a problem, they are excellent at sorting it out :)

if i can get a second hand GTX 780, would that be a safer option. ? Still with warranty aswel mind.

how would 2 x 280x fair in the fps competition ? I do need a new PSU so could use just the one card until i get a new one.

If a game supports Crossfire then 2 x 280Xs would beat a 290 or 780 easily, but there are downsides too, like extra heat, noise, power draw and when games don't support CF etc...

Personally I'd get a decent single card now and get another later on down the line if you need it, and it'll be cheaper then too :)

If you do get a 2nd hand 780, look out for EVGA's, as they allow 2nd users to claim on the warranty if needed :)

Not everyone has problems with the r9 290 cards

I am running R9 290 Crossfire on air with reference and Non-Reference card in a Nvidia Haf-X case.

Custom fan profile is a good way to go.
Here is what temperatures look like with small overclock on the cards.

Crysis 3 runs so cards are working hard.

The 780 is a great card, I put my 780 Classified up for sale recently, Only 5 months old and I got it from Overclockers. If buying new I'd consider a 290 however the MSI gaming 290x is a good price. I'd stretch my budget by waiting an extra week or two to save up for that

Myself I look at secondhand prices in the usual places like Amazon but as a rule I prefer to buy new which is safer and I tend to buy new from Overclockers because I like there way of dealing with us. I've bought 4 different cards from here in the last 7 months and had zero problems with any of them.

Those estimates are overly conservative, just ignore it.

However do take note of the power rail configuration of your PSU. Usually it will have say 2 rails of 28A so you don't want to put the GPU on the same rail as the CPU. This will be shown on the PSU casing.

Even on the MM that'd be a tall ask, plus his PSU wouldn't be up to it.

:)

You would easily get a couple of 7970's for less than £300. Mines went for a total of £285 and 1 even had an EK Block attached and I also sent the stock cooler.but as you say, a 650W would be pushing it. If it would even work at all.

I dont mean to harp on about it, but was looking at the specs of one of the GPUs suggested http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-017-VX&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752 and it says min 750w PSU.. I dont have that :(

OO and what about a HD 7990, they seem to perform very well. can pick up a second hand one for about that price

They overstate that to cover themselves. Most review sites show an R9 290 system consuming ~380w - 400w at stock and 500w at OC. That is for the entire system, not just the card, so you 650w Corsair PSU will be fine.
